The house resembling an art gallery

한강 수변공원 옆의 택지는 오각형의 땅으로 비정형 대지에 대한 고민이 있었다. 나는 대지를 볼 때 좀 오래 머물러 땅을 느껴보려 노력하는 편이다. 그 속에 무엇을 심을 것인가? 이러한 고민은 작품의 영감과 맞닿아 있다.

한강변의 좋은 조망과 바람! 겨울에 방문한 택지는 건물이 드문드문 건축되어 있는 적막한 땅이었다. 한강변의 택지에 서니, 이 땅이 바람이 지나는 바람길이라는 걸 알 수 있었다.
건축주는 3대가 살 수 있는 집을 원했다. 많은 방과 가족들이 놀 수 있는 지하 공간까지, 그리고 날이 좋으면 강변을 바라보며 가족이 힐링할 수 있는 공간을 원했다.

땅은 남북의 축을 살려 남쪽의 도로변 부지의 가로변 시선과 직사의 햇빛을 어떻게 처리할 것인가를 우선적으로 고민했다. ‘도로에 면한 주택의 사생활을 지키기 위해 무엇을 선택해야 할까?’하는 질문에서부터 디자인이 출발했다. 외장재로 벽돌 건물을 요구한 터라 매스의 느낌에도 고민이 많았다. 매스가 풀려가고 평면의 기능적 계획에 대한 고민이 완성될 즈음 다시금 프로세스를 하나씩 연결하고, 공간을 만들 때 다시 한번 세부적인 부분들을 재조정했다. 주택이다 보니 거실에 중점을 두었다. 가족이 모일 수 있는 거실을 상상하며 진행한 소중한 작품이다. 주택의 중심인 거실은 높이 고민을 해결하기 위해 살짝 들어올리기로 했고, 도로변의 시선이 머무는 것을 해결하고자 벽체를 설치하면서 루버 형태의 오픈공간을 통해 내리는 빛으로 자연광을 선사했다. 처음에 건축주는 도로변 시선을 처리한 것을 이해하기 어려워했지만, 건물이 다 지어진 후 상당히 만족하고 있다. 중요한 거실과 함께 복도의 커튼월로 보이는 한강변 갈대밭의 조망은 잠시 서서 바라보게 하는 묘한 매력이 있는 공간으로 완성되었다. 이야기의 끝은 “미술관을 닮은 집에서 가족들은 오래도록 행복하게 살았습니다”라고 맺고 싶다.

Next to the Han River Park, the irregularly shaped plot of land, resembling a pentagon, presented challenges due to its unique configuration. When I encounter a piece of land, I tend to pause and try to sense its character. What should be planted within it? These contemplations are intertwined with the inspiration for my work.
The beautiful view of the Han River and the breeze! The plot of land by the Han River was quiet, with buildings sporadically scattered about, when I visited during winter. Standing on the riverbank plot, I could sense that this land was a pathway for the wind.
The client desired a house that could accommodate three generations. They wanted numerous rooms, an underground space for family activities, and a space for family healing, overlooking the river, on days with good weather.
Considering the north-south axis of the land, I initially pondered how to address the sightline along the road on the south side and how to manage the direct sunlight. The design process began with the question, "What choices should be made to preserve the privacy of a house facing the road?" Given the requirement for brick as the external material, there were numerous considerations for the massing. As the mass started to take shape and the functional layout of the plan was solidified, I gradually connected each step of the process and fine-tuned the details while creating spaces. Since it's a residence, I focused on the living room, envisioning a space where the family could gather. Elevating the central living area slightly resolved height concerns, and to address the gaze from the road, I introduced a louver-like open space through a wall treatment that diffuses natural light. Initially, the client found it difficult to understand the solution for the road-side views, but after the building was completed, they were quite satisfied. Alongside the important living room, the view of the Han River's reed bed through the curtain wall along the corridor created a uniquely charming space that invites one to stand and gaze for a moment. I would like to conclude this story with "In a house resembling an art gallery, the family lived happily for a long time."
