대지는 보문산 향토음식점 거리에 위치하고 있다. 등산객과 관광객의 유입이 많고, 음식점들은 도로를 따라 대부분 1~2층으로 불규칙하게 자리 잡고 있다.

건축주는 1960년도부터 같은 자리에서 장사를 해왔고, 60도에 이르는 경사로 장사를 할 수 있는 면적이 좁아 몇 번의 증축을 통해 상가면적을 넓히며 공간을 사용하고 있었다. 프로젝트의 목표는 명확했다. 유동인구를 담아내고 열악한 대지 조건 속에서 최대한의 면적을 확보하는 것이다.

1층은 로드숍 형태로 도로에 면해 별도로 운영하게 하고, 경사진 도로에서 2층으로 직접 건물에 진입할 수 있도록 했다. 또 2층의 흐름이 직통계단으로 이어지도록 하고, 3층 계단은 4층 영업장 확보를 위해 셋백되어 오르도록 하였다. 이는 일반적인 직통계단처럼 중첩되지 않고 방향을 바꾸어 진입한다. 식당의 운영 특성상 3층에서 대기하고 4층에서 식사를 하기 때문에, 이러한 계단의 흐름은 지루함을 피하는 요소가 되었다.

공사 과정에서 엘리베이터 위치가 변경되는 등 많은 어려움이 있었지만 건축주에겐 삶의 터전이고 인생인 장소이자 건축물을 설계하게 되어 영광이고 즐거운 시간이었다. 그리고 지금껏 그래왔듯이 앞으로도 거리에서 자리를 지키며 사람들에게 오래 기억되는 건축물이 되었으면 하는 바람이다.

“The site is located along the traditional food street of Bomyeonsan. Due to the influx of hikers and tourists, most of the restaurants in the area are irregularly situated along the road, typically spanning 1 to 2 floors.

The property owner has been in business at the same location since the 1960s. Given the limited area available for operating due to the steep slope of about 60 degrees, they have expanded the commercial space through several renovations over the years. The primary objective of the project was clear: to accommodate the transient crowd and maximize space within the challenging site conditions.

The ground floor takes the form of a roadside shop, independently accessible from the street. The design allows direct entry from the sloped road to the second floor. Furthermore, a continuous staircase leads from the second floor, while the third floor staircase ascends in switchback fashion to create a more efficient flow, unlike a typical straight staircase. Given the operational nature of restaurants, where customers wait on the third floor and dine on the fourth floor, this staircase design prevents monotony in the flow.

Despite encountering various challenges during construction, including the relocation of the elevator, for the property owner, this place is not just a venue for their livelihood but also an architectural project that has brought honor and joy to their life. As in the past, they hope that the building, as they continue to maintain their presence along the street, will be remembered by people for a long time to come.”
