Most prospective homeowners seeking to embark on single family home living come with various biases and concerns. It’s our responsibility as architects to address these concerns, leveraging the unique advantages of single-family home architecture to enrich the lives of the residents. Clients often seek us out post-retirement, aiming to transition from apartment living to a second life in a single-family home. They prioritize a seamless integration with outdoor spaces and value privacy protection for comfortable living.

Context
The site is located in the “Seodeul Village,” a land development zone in Jungsan-ri, Mulgeum-eup, Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. With the exception of some mixed-use blocks, the majority of the area consists of single-family homes. Currently, most of the plots have been developed, presenting an impressive village landscape. However, like many land development zones in South Korea, the sites here often pose challenges related to natural lighting, ventilation, and, most importantly, privacy protection—the cornerstone of single family home living. Moreover, with the planning site facing two sides onto 8-meter roads, addressing privacy concerns architecturally became a paramount consideration.

House open inside
The effectiveness of natural lighting and ventilation is directly proportional to the size and placement of windows, and it is also closely related to privacy protection. Therefore, I believe that securing natural lighting and ventilation, which are fundamental requirements of a home, should be approached more cautiously in urban housing. Ignoring the context and installing large windows haphazardly can lead to the ironic situation where curtains or blinds need to be drawn 24/7 for privacy, despite installing windows for lighting and ventilation purposes.
One solution to this problem is to create inward-oriented homes. By installing large windows facing inward towards a private courtyard, it is possible to adequately secure natural lighting and ventilation while increasing the sense of openness indoors. Additionally, this design allows residents to enjoy their own comfortable courtyard without interference from the gaze of others, thus enhancing privacy.

Form created by conditions
The site has a long rectangular shape oriented in the east-west direction, with its northern and eastern sides facing the road. To address concerns about privacy intrusion, windows were minimized on the northern and eastern sides, and the main entrance facing the northern road was angled to minimize visibility from the road. A courtyard was created on the southern side to ensure a distance from neighboring buildings to the south. A 1.8-meter-high barrier was installed to prevent sightlines with adjacent buildings to the south.
The kitchen and living room were arranged in an “L” shape, facing the comfortable courtyard, to efficiently utilize the site while maximizing the connection to outdoor space. The protruding mass above the east-facing kitchen blocks direct sunlight while creating a covered outdoor space with a depth of 2.4 meters, usable even on rainy days or during intense sunlight.
The ground floor accommodates the family’s main living spaces and reception areas, while the second floor provides a separate space for the couple, creating another layer of privacy within the home. Additionally, four skylights were installed to bring natural light into the interior of the house, allowing residents to experience changes in space with shifts in light and shadow according to the seasons and time of day.
