EGO Building

망원동 망원시장 근처에는 망리단길이라 불리는 길이 있다. 길목의 중간쯤에 다다르면 사거리가 나오는데, 주거·상업 등 다양한 성격을 가진 길들이 모이는 곳이라 주민들부터 시작해 망리단길을 찾는 외부인 등 많은 사람들이 지나다니는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 우리의 땅은 이곳에 있다.

진입부는 보행자와 차량의 동선을 구분하기 위해 바닥의 재료를 구분했으며, 진입로 위로 길게 뻗어있는 라인 등은 유리문을 지나 실내까지 이어져 내·외부의 공간을 시각적으로 연결한다. 또 동선과 실 내부의 공간 계획에 있어서, 주계단을 대지의 중앙에 계획함으로써 지하를 제외한 모든 층이 도로 쪽을 바라볼 수 있게 됐다.
평면과 입면은 직선과 곡선의 선들을 넣어 건물의 명함이 확연히 드러나도록 하고, 약 2.4미터 높이의 창문은 개방감과 입면의 단순함을 위해 고정창으로 계획했다. 5층의 층고는 약 4.1미터로 계획했는데, 높은 천정고와 망원동이 한눈에 보이는 넓은 창은 그곳에 서있는 사람으로 하여금 지상으로부터 독립된 공간에 떠 있는 듯한 느낌을 준다.

전체적인 단순함을 추구해 모든 재료 선정에 있어 재료를 최소화하기 위해 노력했다. 이 건물의 재료는 붉은 벽돌과 유리뿐이다.
건축주는 한 층은 업무공간, 또 한 층은 직원들의 휴게공간으로 사용할 예정이다. 독서를 중요시하는 건축주는 직원들과 독서를 통한 나눔의 시간을 가질 수 있는 공간을 원했기에, 커다란 책장과 음료를 준비할 수 있는 가구가 필요했다. 이에 따라 벽 한 면을 전체 책장으로 계획했으며, 층의 중앙에 긴 캔틴을 계획했다. 합판으로 되어있는 약 5미터 길이의 캔틴과 책장은 창을 통해 들어오는 빛과 함께 공간을 차분하게 만들어준다.

준공 때 즈음 봄이 찾아와 옥상에서 선선한 바람을 맞으며 멋진 노을을 볼 수 있었다.
상업과 주거라는 상반되는 특성을 가진 길의 경계에 위치한 이 건물이 많은 사람들에게 기억되는 장소가 되길 기대한다.
