Gitti

‘깃티’는 모퉁이라는 뜻의 경남 방언이다. 대지는 삼거리와 붙어있는 모퉁이 땅으로 반듯한 형태는 아니었으며, 산지로부터 내려오는 농경지의 가장 마지막 필지이기 때문에 비가 오지 않는 날에도 주변의 물이 유입되었다. 게다가 보존녹지지역으로 건폐율은 20%에 불과했기에 개발규모에 제한이 있었다.

대지의 개발 조건은 좋은 편이 아니었지만 주변 환경은 독채 숙소를 두기에 아주 적합했다. 시끌벅적한 황오동이나 주요 관광지에서 멀지 않은 곳에 떨어져 있어 아주 조용하면서도, 주변으로 한옥과 농경지가 드넓게 있어 가을 추수철이면 주변이 황금빛으로 넘실거린다. 또 대문 앞에 내 집 마당처럼 산책할 수 있는 진평왕릉은 아주 좋은 요건이라고 생각했다.

설계, 감리에서부터 브랜딩과 조향, 가구 및 조명디자인까지 모든 것을 맡아 진행하는 만큼 건축에서부터 작은 브랜드 요소까지 일관된 언어를 유지하고 하나의 분위기로 읽히도록 의도했다. 그렇기에 경주라고 하면 떠오르는 한옥이나 신라의 유적이라는 지역성에서 벗어나 대지의 형상과 분위기, 주변 건물들에서 콘셉트를 도출하고 공감대를 형성했다.

깃티(Gitti)는 대지의 경계에 배치된 두 개의 건축물과 중앙정원으로 구성된다. 본채(living room)를 대지 전면에 횡으로 배치하여 도로에서 긴 매스가 보이도록 했는데, 담장과 마당을 지나 건물로 진입하는 일반적인 단독주택의 여정과 차별점을 두고자 했다. 전면 배치된 본채는 진평왕릉과 주변의 한옥 건축물들에 대응하는 한국적 요소이기도 하다. 한옥의 담장을 이루는 장방형 문간채를 새로운 방식으로 제안하고자 했으며, 문간채에서 연장되는 대문과 같이 지붕구조물을 연장하여 그 입구성을 형상화했다.

전통성과 현대성이 조화를 이루는 복합적인 풍경을 만들기 위해 박공지붕과 평지붕, 그리고 철근콘크리트구조와 목구조를 혼합 사용했다. 대지로 들어서기 전에 마주하는 본채는 육중한 노출콘크리트조의 몸체와 목구조 지붕으로 전통적인 모습을 자아내지만, 평지붕으로 이루어진 별채와 어우러져 현대적으로 해석된다.

송판무늬가 찍힌 외벽 노출콘크리트의 패턴과 질감은 깃티의 브랜딩까지 일관되게 연결되는 언어이다. 송판무늬는 콘크리트에 질감과 명암을 주고 공간에 깊이를 더하는데, 이 패턴은 깃티의 브랜드 패턴과 사인물의 형태로 이어지며 자체 제작한 조명과 조향 작업에도 오감을 자극하는 무드를 대입했다.

중앙정원을 바라보는 본채(living room)와 별채(private room)는 면적은 작지만 다채로운 공간 경험을 준다. 본채는 긴 장방형 매스의 공간적 한계를 극복하기 위해 가운데 중정을 두어 모든 지점에서 외부와 접하고 자연채광이 될 수 있도록 계획했다. 별채는 마당을 향하고 있어 전면 폴딩도어를 개폐할 수 있고, 곳곳에 시선이 닿는 곳에 낮은 창을 두어 시선이 벽에 부딪히지 않도록 했다.

내부에서는 목구조를 포함한 자연재료가 주는 질감을 느낄 수 있도록 거실과 방의 바닥, 벽, 천장은 모두 목재로 마감했고, 습식 공간은 철평석을 거칠게 마감했다. 특별히 실내의 벽과 천장은 나뭇결이 두드러지는 나무 판재를 잘라 결 방향대로 붙여서 목재의 존재감을 과감하게 드러냈다. 또한 깃티만의 분위기를 자아내기 위해 전통기법을 현대적으로 해석하는 고소미 작가와 함께 한지를 활용한 플로어램프와 벽부등을 제작해 포인트를 주었다.

‘Gitti’ is a dialect word from the Gyeongsangnamdo region of Korea, meaning corner. True to its name, the site sits at a corner where three roads meet, forming an irregular shape rather than a neatly defined plot. It occupies the final lot of farmland descending from the surrounding hills, which makes it prone to water flow even on dry days. Moreover, as the land is designated as a conservation green area, the building coverage ratio was restricted to just 20%, limiting the scale of development.

Despite these challenges, the surrounding environment was ideal for a stand alone lodging facility. Located just outside of the busy tourist areas like Hwangnam-dong, the site offers quietude and immersion in a rural landscape dotted with hanok (traditional Korean houses) and expansive rice fields. In the autumn harvest season, the surroundings shimmer with golden hues. Additionally, Jinpyeong Royal Tomb—right in front of the gate—provides a serene and intimate walking path that feels like an extension of one’s own yard.

Because our team was responsible for every aspect of the project from architectural design and construction supervision to branding, scent curation, furniture, and lighting—we intentionally maintained a consistent language throughout. Rather than drawing from the usual regional references like hanok or Silla heritage, we developed the concept from the atmosphere of the land itself, its contours, and the neighboring structures.

Gitti is composed of two buildings arranged at the site’s edge, framing a central courtyard. The main building (living room) is placed along the front edge, creating a long mass that’s clearly visible from the road. This choice deliberately deviates from the typical approach of entering a house after passing through a gate and yard. The layout also resonates with nearby hanok and Jinpyeong Royal Tomb, drawing on the archetype of the mun-gan-chae (traditional gatehouse) and reinterpreting it through a contemporary lens. The entrance canopy extends from the main roofline, forming a symbolic gateway akin to traditional Korean eaves.

To create a layered composition balancing tradition and modernity, we combined pitched and flat roofs, and used both reinforced concrete and timber structures. The main building, with its heavy exposed concrete body and timber gabled roof, recalls traditional architecture, while the annex with its flat roof offers a contemporary counterpoint.
The exposed concrete walls are imprinted with pine board textures, establishing a tactile language that continues into Gitti’s branding. The grain patterns give the walls depth and shadow, and are reflected in brand visuals, signage, custom designed lighting, and even scent curation—creating a sensory continuity throughout the space.

Though compact in area, both the main building (living room) and annex (private room) provide varied spatial experiences centered around the courtyard. The main building’s long rectangular mass is broken by an internal courtyard, allowing every space to connect with the outdoors and benefit from natural light. The annex opens fully to the yard with folding doors and features strategically placed low windows to keep sightlines open and unobstructed.

Inside, natural materials enrich the sensory experience. Floors, walls, and ceilings in the living and sleeping areas are finished entirely in wood. Wet areas are finished with roughly textured slate. Notably, the walls and ceilings use timber planks with emphasized wood grain, arranged by grain direction to express the bold presence of the material. For lighting, we collaborated with artist Kosomi, who reinterprets traditional Korean techniques in modern form, producing custom floor and wall lamps made of hanji (traditional Korean paper) that complete the atmosphere unique to Gitti.
