대전 관평동 성당은 종교가 주는 믿음으로부터 오는 편안함, 고양된 정신, 신과 인간의 교감 등을 표현하고자 부드러운 곡선의 윙(wing)을 모티브로 빛과 공간의 관계설정에 주력했다. 3개의 윙은 삼위일체의 의미와 하늘과 인간을 연결하는 천사의 날개에서 조형적인 이미지를 이끌어 내었다. 수직과 수평, 매스의 분절과 엮임, 대비되는 재료를 활용하여 구성한 공간은 성당 그 이상으로 현대적 갤러리나 미술관에 온 듯 편안한 느낌을 주도록 했다.
대성전이 있는 본관 동은 근린공원과 마주함으로써 개방성과 상징성을 높여주고 이와 연결된 부속 동은 대지 북쪽에 두고 2층 브리지로 연결시켰다. 두 개의 건물 사이에 자리한 마당은 상부가 비워져 있으며 대성전으로 향하는 2층 마당과 입체적으로 교감할 수 있도록 계획했다. 부속동 상부에 마련된 옥상 정원과 발코니는 마당과 시각적으로 연결되며, 필로티로 띄워져 있는 주차장과 함께 적극적인 행사 마당으로서의 활용 가능성을 열어두었다. 여기에 더하여 징크 패널과 석재, 전벽돌로 적절히 분절된 입면은 부속동과 성당 공간이 차별화되어 인식될 수 있게 했다.

I found the site with the possibility of the religious architecture design that I was always interested in. When I talked with the priest, I came to the conclusion that 'Oh, if he has this idea, I should try my best.' I thought that architecture should reflect the society and culture of the time, and that the concepts and spaces inherent in architecture should be implemented with materials and technologies optimized in the present era. And I found the possibility through the conversation.
Through the designation competition, I carefully crafted a modern but sublime design, and fortunately I was selected as the designer with the best of the three works. In order to express the comfort from the faith of religion, the elevated spirit, and the connection between God and man, I sketched the facade with the motif of a soft curve Wing that metaphorizes the trinity, and examined the relationship between light and space in various angles.
