남양주시 장현로는 오랫동안 오일장이 열리며 구도심의 중심을 형성해왔지만, 지금은 왕숙천 너머 신시가지 개발로 활기를 잃은 풍경이다. 그런 거리에 네 개의 거친 콘크리트 코어탑은 분절된 덩어리로 펀그라운드의 존재를 알린다. 매끈한 곡면 루버의 반복은 이와 대비를 이루며 윤곽을 만들고 청소년을 맞이할 준비를 한다. 도로에서부터 실내를 거쳐 후정까지 하나로 연결되며 이어지는 광장은 청소년들이 자유롭게 다양한 방식으로 이곳을 찾아오고 이용하도록 해주는 도시적 장치이다. 펀그라운드 진접은 기존 청소년시설의 한계를 넘어서 그들이 주인이 되어 만들어 나가는 문화 거점 시설이자 아지트로서, 건강한 교류와 즐거움이 가득한 열린 플랫폼을 만드는 과감한 시도이다.

언더그라운드_ 광장, 소통, 만남
이동식 계단과 함께 다채로운 활동이 가능한 열린 거리, 교류하는 공터이다. 관통하듯 내려온 실린더 조명 아래 어떠한 것도 규정되지 않는 모든 가능성의 공간이자 춤추고 뛰고 노는 생동감으로 충만한 장소이다. 아트북 서재와 라운지는 문화적 호기심을 자극하고 영감을 주는 공간이자 만남과 기다림이 있는 곳이다.

온그라운드_ 자유, 아지트, 확장
하루 종일 측창과 천창을 통해 따뜻한 자연광을 품는다. 이 공간을 가로지르는 20개의 실린더는 청소년 개개인의 능동적 선택을 담으면서 각기 다른 감각과 높이를 통해 새롭고 낯선 공간 경험을 유도한다. 청소년들이 정해지지 않은 동선 속에서 자신만의 아지트를 발견하고 선택하는 과정 속에서 스스로 성장해 나갈 수 있도록 했다. 여기에서는 무엇을 해도 되는 자유와 어떤 것도 하지 않을 자유가 공존한다.
 
오버그라운드_ 자연, 교감, 휴식
노란 폴리카보네이트 볼륨이 관통하는 오버그라운드는 학습공간과 외부 휴게공간으로 구성되어 주변 자연과 도시를 조망하도록 했다. 태양광 패널 캐노피가 자연스럽게 그늘막을 만들어 주고, 다양한 콘크리트 벤치와 바닥 패턴이 청소년의 공간 활용을 돕고 휴식하게 해준다.

 

심사평
공공시설임에도 ‘흔히 공공시설은 감안해서 본다’라는 말이 무색하게 높은 수준의 완성도를 보여준다. 건축사의 역량뿐만 아니라 건축을 만들고, 프로그램 운영자들과 협의와 구성, 그 결과를 바탕으로 건축사가 참여한 내부 인테리어 디자인에 이르기까지 흔히 공공건축에서 보기 어려운 높은 수준의 협력을 높은 완성도로 증명해 주었다. 청소년 활동 공간을 담고 있는 단순한 사각형 주공간 열린 마당의 인상은 청소년들이 주체라는 본질을 쉽게 눈치채게 해준다. 주공간의 표면은 곡면의 알루미늄 프로파일의 반복 설치로 구현된다. 지원하는 공간인 계단, 엘리베이터, 화장실 등 요소들은 독립적인 형태를 가지며 수직 패턴을 이룬다. 수직 패턴의 문양 거프집으로 구현된 노출콘크리트의 돌출 부위는 깨어내 전체적으로 자연스러운 표면을 만들었다. 이곳을 방문하는 청소년들이 ‘펀 그라운드 덕분에 서울 강남에 갈 필요를 못 느낀다’라고 했다는 말이 기억에 남는다.

Janghyeon-ro, Namyangju City, has long been the center of the old city center with the five day market, but it is now a scene that has lost its vitality due to the development of a new town beyond Wangsukcheon Stream. At such a distance, the four rough concrete core towers announce the existence of Funground as a segmented mass. The repetition of smooth curved louvers creates a contrast, creating an outline and preparing to welcome youth. The plaza, which connects from the road through the interior to the back yard, is an urban device that allows young people to freely visit and use the place in various ways. Funground Jinjeop is a cultural base facility and hideout that youth create as their own owners, going beyond the limitations of existing youth facilities, and is a bold attempt to create an open platform full of healthy exchange and enjoyment.

Underground_ Square, communication, meeting
It is an open street with movable stairs where various activities can take place, and an empty space for exchange. It is a space of all possibilities where nothing is defined under the penetrating cylinder lights, and a place filled with the vitality of dancing, jumping, and playing. The Art Book Study and Lounge are spaces that stimulate cultural curiosity and provide inspiration, as well as places of meeting and waiting.
 
On Ground_ Freedom, hideout, expansion
It receives warm natural light through side windows and skylights all day long. The 20 cylinders that run across this space contain the active choices of individual youth and induce new and unfamiliar spatial experiences through different senses and heights. We enable youth to grow on their own through the process of discovering and choosing their own hideout within an undetermined path. Here, the freedom to do anything and the freedom to not do anything coexist.

Overground_Nature, communion, relaxation
The overground, which is penetrated by a yellow polycarbonate volume, consists of a study space and an external rest area, providing a view of the surrounding nature and city. A solar panel canopy naturally creates a shade canopy, and various concrete benches and floor patterns help youth utilize the space and allow them to rest.

 

Commentary
Despite being a public facility, it demonstrates a high level of completeness that renders the saying, “Public facilities are usually overlooked,” obsolete. Not only does it showcase the competence of architects, but it also highlights a level of collaboration that is rarely seen in public architecture, extending from constructing the building to discussing and organizing with program operators, and culminating in the interior design in which architects participate, all resulting in a high level of completion.
The simple rectangular main space housing youth activities is complemented by the impression of an open courtyard, making it easy for the youth to realize that they are at the center. The surface of the main space is realized through the repetitive installation of curved aluminum profiles. Supporting elements like stairs, elevators, and restrooms feature independent forms, forming a vertical pattern. The protrusions in exposed concrete, implemented in the form of the vertical pattern, contribute to an overall natural surface. I recall the words of the youth who visited this place, saying, “Thanks to Fun Ground, I don’t feel the need to go to Gangnam in Seoul.”
