시골 책방_Oh! My Book
남측으로는 청도 남산이 펼쳐지고 북으로는 화양읍이 눈에 들어오는 대지에 ‘시골 책방’ 콘셉트의 서점과 카페, 주인장의 주거공간 프로젝트이다. 건축주는 ‘책방’을 모티브로 화양읍 일대의 젊은 부부, 청년들의 문화 공간이자 소통의 공간을 만들고자 했다. 이 공간은 실제 여러 엄마들의 교류 장소가 되었고, 마당은 아이들의 놀이터, 저녁엔 아빠들의 사랑방이 되었다. 청도읍성과 가까이 있어 지역 외 사람들의 방문도 잦다.

배치
‘책과 카페’라는 특성을 고려해 주 도로에서 마당을 숨기고, 건물 내부는 마당으로 열었다. 남산 방향으로 열린 마당은 파고라와 목재데크를 계획하여, 서점과 카페의 특성상 실내 분위기와 맞지 않는 소음이 발생할 수 있는 행위들은 옥외에서 이루어질 수 있도록 했다. 마당은 다양한 이벤트가 가능한 공간으로, 건물 내부 이용객들에겐 주위 자연 풍경과 더불어 또 하나의 그림이 된다.

평면
내부는 1층 서점, 2층은 카페와 게스트하우스, 3층은 단독주택으로 수직적으로 나누었다. 주거와 비주거 용도의 동선과 시선의 분리와, 서점과 카페의 외부 풍경과의 관계 맺기를 주안점으로 계획했다. 주택은 마당을 통해 주출입을 계획하고, 내부에서 서점과 주택의 동선을 연결해 관리 동선을 확보했다. 1층과 2층의 서점과 카페 공간은 각 테이블마다 바깥 풍경이 다양하게 들어올 수 있도록 서가와 벽체로 열림과 닫힘을 배분해 위치에 따라 각각 다른 풍경이 들어오도록 했다.

형태
책이란 아이템에서 서가에 꽂힌 책을 떠올렸다. 1층과 계단실 부분을 동일한 재료로 계획하고, 2층과 3층의 매스(MASS)를 수직으로 분할하고 분할된 매스끼리는 오일스테인의 색상을 달리하여 분할된 매스를 부각시켰다. 무거운 느낌의 모노브릭에는 정사각형의 작은 사이즈 창호를 불규칙하게 배열하고, 목재 마감 부분에는 직사각형의 긴 창호를 계획하여 재료가 가진 물성이 돋보일 수 있도록 했다.

사람마다 생각이 다르지만, 전원 속의 건물일수록 주변 환경과 더 잘 조화되어야 한다고 생각한다. 주변의 돌담들, 논과 밭, 나무들과 어울리는 재료 선정과 개성 있지만 절제된 형태의 구성이 시골 풍경과 더 어울리지 않을까 한다.

Oh! My Book: A Rural Bookstore
Situated on a site where the southern Cheongdo Namsan stretches out and the north reveals Hwayangeup, this project encompasses a bookstore and cafe with a ‘rural bookstore’ concept, along with the owner’s residence. The owner aimed to create a cultural and communication space for young couples and youths in the Hwayangeup area. This space has become a gathering place for many mothers, a playground for children during the day, and a gathering space for fathers in the evenings. Being close to Cheongdoeup Fortress, it also frequently attracts visitors from outside the area.

Layout
Considering the ‘books and cafe’ theme, the courtyard is hidden from the main road, while the building opens toward it. The courtyard facing Namsan is designed with a pergola and wooden deck to accommodate activities that might produce noise inconsistent with the indoor ambiance of the bookstore and cafe. The courtyard serves as a versatile event space, offering building users an additional picturesque view alongside the surrounding natural landscape.

Floor Plan
The interior is vertically divided with the bookstore on the first floor, the cafe and guesthouse on the second, and a single-family home on the third. The design focuses on separating the circulation and views between residential and non-residential uses and on connecting the bookstore and cafe with the exterior views. The main entrance to the residence is planned through the courtyard, with internal circulation linking the bookstore and residence to manage the flow efficiently. The first and second floors are designed so that each table in the bookstore and cafe can enjoy a variety of views, achieved by adjusting the openness and closure of shelves and walls.

Form
Inspired by the item of books, the design recalls books placed on shelves. The first floor and stairwell are planned with the same materials, while the masses on the second and third floors are vertically segmented. Different oil stain colors highlight these divided masses. A heavy sense of monobrick is complemented by irregularly arranged small square windows, and long rectangular windows in the wooden finishes enhance the material’s properties.

While opinions vary, I believe that buildings in rural settings should harmonize better with their surroundings. The choice of materials and restrained yet distinctive forms are designed to blend with the surrounding stone walls, fields, and trees, enhancing the rural landscape.
