산수유 꽃이 흐드러지게 핀 들녘을 지나면, 작은 저수지를 앞으로 하고 지리산 간미봉에 기대어 앉은 자그마한 마을이 나타난다. 회화와 조각을 하는 예술가들이 모여 만든 ‘구례 예술인마을’. 그러한 마을에 처음으로 음악가의 집이 들어서게 됐다. 

바이올리니스트 가족들의 별서인 동시에 실내악을 연습하고 소규모 공연을 겸할 수 있는 작은 음악당을 의뢰받았다. 개인적인 성격의 별서공간과, 개방적인 성격의 음악당을 한 곳에 두기 위해 공용현관을 중심으로 교차해 배치함으로써 서로의 영역을 나누었다. 구릉의 제일 아래에 위치한 만큼 뒷집 거실에서의 풍경을 배려하기 위해 가운데를 낮추고 양쪽 끝을 높여 형태를 계획하고, 바라보는 시선이 자연스럽게 주변으로 흐를 수 있도록 완만하고 편안한 선형의 지붕 물매를 잡았다.

음악당 내부는 일부 바닥을 낮추어 자연스러운 무대와 객석을 만들고, 일부 천장을 높여 작지만 깊은 소리를 담을 수 있는 공간을 계획했다. 낮고 열린 담장으로 둘러싸인 마당은 음악당의 객석이 확장될 수 있는 동시에, 가족들이 주변 자연환경을 여유롭게 즐기며 누릴 수 있는 별서의 마당이 되도록 했다. 음악당 층고를 높임으로써 만들어진 2층 데크의 앉음계단은 가족실과 자연스럽게 연결되어 주변 자연환경을 넉넉히 느낄 수 있도록 했다. 

소리를 담지만 스스로를 드러내지 않고, 오히려 주변 풍경으로 시선이 자연스레 흐를 수 있는 공간. 마을의 초입에, 어쩌면 마을의 첫인상이 될 수도 있는 곳에 들어서는 이 건물이 그곳 풍경과 조금씩 닮아 가는 모습을 상상해 보았다.

Passing through fields adorned with blooming Cornelian cherry blossoms, one comes upon a small village nestled by a reservoir at the foot of Ganmibong in Jirisan. This is the ‘Gurye Artists’ Village,’ a community formed by painters and sculptors. In this picturesque setting, the village is about to welcome its first house for musicians.

The project is a retreat for a family of violinists, doubling as a small concert hall where they can practice chamber music and hold intimate performances. To balance the private nature of the retreat with the public function of the concert hall, the design places these two spaces on either side of a shared main entrance, effectively separating the different areas.

Situated at the lowest point of the hillside, the building’s form is designed to respect the views from the neighboring house’s living room. The center of the building is lowered, with the ends raised, creating a gentle, comfortable roof slope that naturally guides the eye towards the surrounding landscape.
Inside the concert hall, part of the floor is lowered to create a natural stage and seating area, while part of the ceiling is raised to enhance the acoustics, allowing for rich and deep sounds in the space. The courtyard, enclosed by a low, open fence, serves as an extension of the concert hall’s seating area and provides a private outdoor space where the family can enjoy the surrounding natural environment.

The increased height of the concert hall creates a second floor deck with stepped seating, seamlessly connecting to the family room and offering ample opportunities to appreciate the natural surroundings.

This building is designed to capture sound without drawing attention to itself, instead allowing the surrounding scenery to take center stage. Located at the entrance of the village, it has the potential to become the village’s first impression. The hope is that this building will gradually blend into the landscape, becoming one with the scenery it inhabits.
