‘천의 바람’- 우리 삶의 아름다움을 되새기는 풍경

이 건축은 죽은 자를 위한 시설이다. 무려 만 명의 삶이 죽음으로 모여 있는 곳이니 죽은 자들의 공동체이며 도시이다. 그래서 도시로서 갖추어야 할 시설로 전체를 구성했다. 특히 경사지에 위치한 도시여서 개별의 거처들이 테라스하우스의 형식을 가지는 게 기본이었다. 이 테라스하우스의 앞은 들여 올려진 아래 집들의 지붕을 덮은 잔디로 인해 독립된 영역을 이루고 있으며 위에서 보면 전체가 녹지로 덮여 있어 특별한 공원의 모습이다. 적절한 크기의 테라스하우스들이 모여 이뤄진 작은 공동체들은 경사로나 계단의 길로 연결되고 그 절점에 적절한 크기의 공원들과 광장들 그리고 개별 공동체의 성소들이 공통적 시설로 배분되어 있다. 이 도시 전체를 위한 광장은 아래 입구에 위치한다. 물로 바닥을 덮고 내후성강판의 높은 담으로 에워싸여진 이곳은, 출입하는 이들에게 이 땅이 새로운 도시, 침묵의 도시라는 것을 알려준다. 그러나 묘역은 사실 죽은 자를 위한 장소가 아니다. 인간은 육과 체, 그리고 영과 혼, 이 네 가지로 구성되는데, 살과 뼈로 이루어진 몸은 주검이 되어 묘지에 묻히지만 결국은 소멸하여 존재하지 않게 된다. 더구나 화장하여 납골하게 되는 육체는 상징일 따름이지 실재하지 않는다. 마음이나 감정, 열정을 좌우하는 혼도 육체의 죽음과 함께 사라진다. 남는 것은 영인데, 육체의 안과 밖을 넘나드는 영은 본디 자유로운 존재여서, 거주할 육체가 소멸하면 다른 세계로 갈 수밖에 없으니 그 영도 결국 묘지에 있지 않다. 

지혜로운 인디언에게는 ‘천 개의 바람’이란 노래가 있었다.

“내 무덤 앞에서 울지 마오. /  나는 거기 있는 게 아니라오
 나는 잠들지 않아요

 나는 천의 바람, 천의 숨결로 흩날린다오
 나는 눈 위에 반짝이는 다이아몬드입니다
 나는 무르익은 곡식 비추는 햇빛이며 / 나는 부드러운 가을비라오.

 당신이 아침 소리에 깨어날 때 / 나는 하늘을 고요히 맴돌고 있어요
 나는 밤하늘에 비치는 따스한 별이라오 
 ---------”

그렇다. 묘역에는 죽은 자가 있는 게 아니라 죽은 자에 대한 우리의 기억이 거주할 뿐이다. 그러니 묘역은 죽은 자의 공간이 아니라 남은 우리 산 자들이 죽은 자를 기억하며 스스로를 성찰하는 장소며 풍경이다. 그래서 묘역을 찾는 일, 묘지를 가까이 두는 일은 우리 삶의 진정성을 담보하는 일이 된다. 그러니 굳이 우리의 가까운 혈육이 여기에 기록되어 있지 않더라도 우리의 정체성에 의문이 들 때면, 이곳을 찾아 침묵으로 소요하며 우리 삶의 아름다움을 되새기는 순간의 풍경으로 제안했다.

Public Cemetery; A Thousand Winds

Being a place where ten thousand lives are gathered in the form of death, it is a community and city of the dead. So designing the whole structure as a complete set of required facilities for a city is top priority. With a city located on a slope, it was a rule to make each individual shelter follow the format of a terraced house. Due to the grass covering the roof of terraced house below, the front side of each terraced house is an independent area. From a bird’s eye view, the whole place looks like a unique park completely covered with green area. Small communities of terraced houses of varying sizes are connected to each other through the paths on the slope or staircases. Shared facilities including small parks and squares as well as the sanctuary of each community are located at the junctions of paths. The main square for the whole city is located around the bottom entrance. With its floor covered with water and surrounded by high walls made of weathering steel, this place eventually tells its visitors that it is a new city of silence.
As a matter of fact, however, the, graveyard is not a place for the dead. A human being consists of four things: body (體), flesh (肉), spirit (靈), and soul (魂). While body and flesh become a corpse and are buried in a grave, they dissipate and cease to exist in the end. When cremated and put in the charnel house, they are merely a symbol and cannot represent the existence of the person. Soul, which represents human mind, emotion, and passion, also goes extinct at the point of death. What remains is spirit: it is an unconstrained being that freely comes in and out of the human body from the first place. However, once a spirit loses its body and flesh, it cannot remain in this world. It does not exist, therefore, in the grave, but is ousted to another world. 

Here is a poem that is said to have originated from a song of wise Indians, A Thousand Winds.

“Do not stand at my grave and weep, / Iamnotthere,Idonotsleep.

 Iamathousandwindsthatblow. / Iamthediamondglintonsnow.
 I am the sunlight on ripened grain. / Iamthegentleautumnrain.

 Whenyouawakeninthemorning'shush, / Iamtheswiftupliftingrush
 Ofquietbirdsincircledflight, / Iamthesoftstarsthatshineatnight.

 Donotstandatmygraveandcry; / Iamnotthere.Ididnotdie.”

What the poem says seems to be right. It is not the dead who dwell in the graveyard; it is our memory of the deceased that lingers there. As such, the graveyard is not a space for the dead but a place and landscape where the living look into themselves, bringing back the memory of the dead. Therefore, visiting a graveyard or having it nearby is a way of ensuring the sincerity of life. Everybody should be encouraged to come here for a moment of reflection on the beauty of life, strolling in silence.
