평동산업단지 화물자동차 공영차고지는 밤샘주차로 인한 교통사고 위험 및 소음 공해 등을 해소하기 위해 권역별로 시행되고 있는 공영사업이다. 화물차 차고지를 설계하기 전엔 덤프트럭이 큰 차종에 속한다고 생각했다. 그러나 덤프트럭은 대형차에 속할 뿐 트레일러 등 특대형차들이 즐비하다는 것을 알게 됐다. 
새로운 프로젝트는 대개가 새로운 컨디션, 용도 등을 목표로 할 때가 많다. 처음 화물차고지를 수주했을 때 화물차와 화물차고지에 대해 아는 게 거의 없다시피 했다. 그래서 지인이 화물차 운행을 하고 있다는 사실을 떠올려 몇 번이나 묻고 또 물었다. 화물차의 특성에 대해, 화물차의 운행에 대해, 화물차 운행 시의 필요사항에 대해. 그리고 우리나라 화물차고지의 운행실태와 사례, 해외 차고지의 사례, 또한 각종 보고서와 문헌 등을 포괄적으로 연구·검토하고 난 후에야 비로소 사이트를 들여다보고 계획을 세울 수 있었다. 
화물차차고지의 가장 큰 목적은 화물차를 주차하는 것. 약 182면(특대형: 3.5미터x18미터, 72대, 대형: 3.3미터x14미터, 106대)의 화물차 주차대수(승용주차: 76면)를 계획했고, 관리동과 주유동, 세차동의 건축물이 주요 사업내용이었다. 관리동엔 관리사무소와 물류시스템실, 기사님들이 이용할 수 있는 편의점과 휴게실, 샤워실 등이 필요했다. 가장 많은 용도로 사용돼야 하므로 각 50제곱미터의 임대사무실 14개소가 필요하였다. 
평동 화물차고지는 새롭게 조성되는 평동3차 산업단지 한 곳에 있다. 3동 건물이 적합한 자리에 조화롭게 위치한다는 계획과 함께 산업단지 내 대부분 건축물을 금속으로 마감한 것을 고려해, 새롭게 들어서는 화물차고지 관리동은 따뜻하고 차분한 느낌의 건축물이기를 바랐다. 그리하여 관리동 외장재료를 치장벽돌쌓기로 선택했고 건축물의 입면을 최대한 차분하게 디자인하고자 했다. 평면계획 또한 주요 시설인 임대사무소의 실들이 편복도로 배치될 수 있게 깊지 않는 장변으로 계획해 사용공간의 쾌적성과 사용성의 극대화를 꾀했다. 또 잠시 다른 곳을 볼 수 있는 여유를 주기 위해 각 층마다 휴게데크를 설치했다.
대부분의 프로젝트가 그렇듯이 평동 화물자동차 공영차고지도 여러 지난한 과정들을 겪었다. 설계기간 2년, 공사기간 1년 동안 많은 사람들이 작업에 참여해 각자의 역할을 성실히 수행하였다. 관공서 건축에서 새로운 디자인을 구현하는 것은 그리 녹록한 일이 아니다. 설계자의 의도를 새로이 업무를 맡은 시공자, 감리자, 감독관, 그리고 운영자, 사용자들 모두에게 이해시키는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니었다. 그럼에도 설계의도에서 크게 벗어나지 않은 모습으로 자태를 드러낸 평동 화물자동차 공영차고지는 오늘도 그 자리를 담담히 지키고 있다.

The public garage for trucks in Pyeongdong Industrial Complex was a public project implemented by region to reduce the risk of traffic accidents and noise pollution caused by overnight parking in addition to the purpose of a truck garage.
Before designing the truck garage, I thought dump trucks are large-sized vehicles. However, I knew that dump trucks are just large vehicles, and there are much bigger vehicles, such as trailers.
In the case of new projects, they are generally new conditions or purposes for designers. When I first won the contract to build a truck garage, I knew very little about trucks and truck garages. So I asked my acquaintance, a truck driver, all about truck driving, including how to drive and the necessary matters related to the vehicles. And I looked into the site and could make a plan after comprehensive research and review of the operation conditions, domestic and overseas cases of truck garages, and various reports and literature.
The primary purpose of a truck garage is to park trucks, so about 182 parking zones(3.5x18m: 72 extra-large trucks, 3.3x14m: 106 large-sized trucks) were planned with the construction of a management building, a gas-filling building, and a car wash building. The management building required a management office and a logistics system office, a convenience store, a lounge, a shower room for drivers to use, and 14 offices for rent, 50㎡ each for most purposes.
Pyeongdong Truck Garage is located in the corner of the newly created Pyeongdong 3rd Industrial Complex, so the plan focused on determining the three buildings harmoniously in an appropriate place. And I hoped that the newly built maintenance building would be warm and calm because most of the buildings in the industrial complex are finished with metal. Therefore, brickwork was selected for the exterior material of the management building. And the elevation of the building was designed to be as calm as possible. The floor plan was also designed with a long side that is not deep so that the rooms of the rental office, which are the main facilities, can be arranged through corridor access to maximize the space's comfort and usability. And each floor was designed to have a deck to relax for a while.
Like most projects, Pyeongdong Public Truck Garage also underwent many complicated processes. During two years of design and one year of construction, many people participated in this project faithfully performing their roles. The implementation of a new design in government office architecture is not so easy. It was not easy for the newly assigned contractor, the supervisor, the inspector, the operator, and the users to understand the designer's intention. Nevertheless, Pyeongdong Public Truck Garage, which is not much different from the design intention, is still in its place composedly today.
