Decided to build
A young couple in their early 30s decided to build a single-family home, fulfilling the wife’s dream. Unlike the husband, who had always lived in apartments, the wife had spent about 10 years of her 30 years of life in a single-family house. After getting married and moving into an office apartment, she found it confining and impersonal. It didn’t feel like home. Enduring the noise from neighbors she didn’t even know was particularly challenging.
Initially, the husband agreed to the idea to support his wife, but as he worked in a field related to architecture, he began to desire a beautifully designed home for himself. The couple had both majored in architecture and interior design in college—the husband worked as a public official in architecture, and the wife as an interior designer. They purchased a sunny plot of land in Suwon’s old downtown area and met with an architect.
Although they found an architect whose style matched their preferences, they hesitated at first, as the architect was as experienced as a university professor. They questioned whether it was worth paying significant design fees for a small house. Ultimately, they decided to proceed, realizing that to build their long-dreamed home, they needed an architect who would care about the project as much as they did.

The couple’s requirements were simple: a two- or three-story single-family house with three rooms, a space to protect their car from rain, and a design that, while simple, would be intriguing. Among their requests, a few stood out:
“We’d like arched windows as a cute highlight.”
“A house that is simple yet interesting.”
“It would be nice to have a front gate.”
Due to budget constraints, the front gate installation was postponed, and construction proceeded without it.

My real house with an arch
The first floor of ‘Welcome House’ consists of a living room and kitchen. Uniquely, the entrance space where shoes are removed is spacious and doubles as the living room. The living room features tiled flooring, allowing plants to be grown in pots. A low platform separates the living room from the kitchen and dining area, where plywood was chosen as the finishing material. The floor and ceiling in this space were unified in similar tones to create a sense of distinction from the living room.
At the center of the first floor, four structural pillars rise, connecting to a skylight on the roof via a void that runs through the building’s core. This allows sunlight to cascade down from the roof to the first floor.
On the second floor, two rooms are located on the left, while the right side contains a dressing room area. The two rooms are connected with sliding doors, allowing them to function as a single space or as independent rooms, accommodating the future possibility of a child. The dressing room features a shower, toilet, washing machine, and powder room. On the southern side, a large window seat, named the ‘Terrace,’ provides a view of the entire house, including the rounded arch of the ceiling.
The third floor houses one room with a bathtub. The couple originally envisioned an outdoor terrace, but to balance costs and maintenance considerations, the space was enclosed, with a skylight installed nearby to create an outdoor ambiance. From the third floor, one can view the arch of the second floor and the living room below.
