KOSOMI STUDIO

 

 

 

고소미 스튜디오는 작가가 가족들과 함께 살았던 주택으로 건물 내외부의 각 공간들은 과거의 기억을 품은 채, 새로운 공간으로 컨버전(con-version)되었다. 

가장 중요한 점은 추억이 깃든 집에 너무 큰 변경을 가하지 않으면서도 변화와 새 출발을 상징하는 것이었다. 특히 인접한 단독주택과 함께 정감 있는 풍경을 이루고 있어, 주변 맥락을 해치고 싶지 않았기에 가로의 스케일과 감성을 최대한 보존하면서 외관에 변화를 주고자 전면에 현대적인 소재가 아닌 목재의 입면 구조물을 계획했다. 목재 이중외피는 2층 작업실의 프라이버시를 보장하면서도 1층 다실의 남향 햇빛을 조절하는 스크린이 된다.

1층 쇼룸은 공간 구획을 위해 필요한 최소한의 벽만 남겨둔 채 개방된 공간으로 계획했다. 각 구역은 다실, 거실, 두 개의 전시공간으로 나뉜다. 1층의 내장 마감재는 작가의 작품과 조화를 이루도록 세심하게 선정했는데, 주출입구부터 손님을 맞는 거실은 화강석 한식깔기로 시공하고 질감이 두드러지는 훈증무늬목과 거친 도장으로 마감했다. 또한 주택으로 사용하던 모습을 남기기 위해 일부 벽 구조와 목재계단을 노출시켜 새것과 옛 것이 공존하도록 했다. 1층에 사용된 마감재와 시공법은 작가가 직접 베틀로 짜고 제작한 작품들과 함께 어우러져 공간의 동양적이면서도 편안한 느낌을 증폭시킨다. 
2층 작업실은 날 것의 공간이다. 이곳에서는 벽체와 천장이 모두 드러나며 여러 번의 공사를 거친 집의 흔적들이 남아있다. 이러한 모습은 손질되지 않은 재료에서부터 원단을 완성시켜나가는 작가의 작업과정을 상징하기도 한다. 오래되어 무너진 목재 바닥틀은 보강하여 사용에 맞게 새로 구성하고 작업에 적합한 고강도 타일로 마감했다. 2층 방의 구획은 그대로 남겨져 성형실, 염색실, 재봉실로 재탄생했다. 

고소미 스튜디오는 목재계단과 같이 1970년대 전형적인 도심 단독주택의 모습을 보여주는 요소들과 전통적인 방식으로 만들어지는 작가의 작품들이 조화를 이루어 새로운 공간을 직조한다. 이러한 노력은 건물의 원래 모습과 새로운 기능을 결합시키는데, 장소의 기억을 이어나가고 마을의 풍경을 유지하는 리모델링 방식이기에 중요하다.  

 

 

외관

KOSOMI STUDIO was originally a residence where the artist lived with their family. The interior and exterior spaces of the building have been transformed into new uses while preserving memories of the past. The key focus was to symbolize change and a fresh start without making drastic alterations to the house imbued with cherished memories.
In harmony with the adjacent single-family homes, which create a nostalgic neighborhood atmosphere, the goal was to avoid disrupting the surrounding context. To preserve the horizontal scale and sentiment of the street, the façade was updated with a wooden structure rather than modern materials. This wooden double skin ensures privacy for the second-floor studio while serving as a screen to regulate southern sunlight for the tearoom on the first floor. 
The first-floor showroom was designed as an open space, with only the minimal walls necessary to divide it into zones, including a tearoom, a living room, and two exhibition spaces. The interior finishes were carefully selected to harmonize with the artist’s work. From the main entrance, the living room welcomes visitors with traditional granite flooring and finishes that feature textured fumigated veneer and rough coatings. 
To retain the building’s residential history, some original wall structures and wooden staircases were left exposed, blending the old with the new. The chosen materials and techniques amplify an oriental yet comfortable atmosphere, particularly when paired with the artist’s handwoven works displayed throughout the space. 
The second-floor studio maintains a raw aesthetic. Exposed walls and ceilings reveal traces of the building’s multiple renovations, symbolizing the artist’s process of creating fabrics from unprocessed materials. The old, deteriorated wooden floor frames were reinforced and restructured, then finished with durable tiles suitable for workspaces. 
The original room layout was preserved, transforming the spaces into a shaping room, dyeing room, and sewing room. This approach honors the building’s history while adapting it for its new functions. 
Gosomi Studio incorporates elements of a typical 1970s urban single-family home, such as the wooden staircase, and merges them with the traditional craftsmanship evident in the artist’s works. This effort creates a new space that reflects the harmony of old and new, extending the memories of the place while preserving the character of the neighborhood. 
This remodeling approach, which combines the building’s original features with its new purposes, is a testament to the importance of maintaining the essence of a place while breathing new life into it.
