서울 강북구 수송초등학교 맞은편 유휴 부지에 주민들을 위한 스마트팜센터를 조성하는 프로젝트이다. 스마트팜은 정보통신기술(ICT)을 활용하여 원격으로, 자동으로 작물이나 가축의 생육환경을 적정하게 유지·관리할 수 있는 농장 시설을 말하는데, 온실형 스마트팜, 식물공장, 스마트 과수원, 스마트 축사 등이 있다. 그중에서 강북구 스마트팜센터는 인공광 식물공장으로서, 외부와 차단된 시설 내에서 빛, 온도, 습도, CO₂, 배양액 등의 환경 조건을 인공적으로 제어하여 계절에 관계없이 작물을 계획적이고 연속적으로 생산할 수 있는 수직 다단 재배 농장이다. 도시농업의 활성화, 친환경 농산물 제공, 일자리 창출 등을 통해 지역 발전과 공동체 의식 함양에 기여하고자 하는 목적을 가지고 계획됐다.

대상지는 상태가 좋지 않은 키 큰 나무들로 둘러싸인, 영구 음지에 놓인 어두운 공간이었다. 표정 없는 대상지에 활력을 불어넣고자 연속된 경사 지붕을 계획했으며, 밝은 귤색의 입면을 선택했다. 한천로를 바라보는 정면에는 요철을 적용해 대로변에서의 시각적 부담을 줄였으며, 보행로에서는 자연스러운 동선을 유도했다.

1층의 스마트팜 직판장은 누구나 자유롭게 들어와 담소를 나누거나 스마트팜 채소를 구입할 수 있는 열린 장소로 계획했다. 주차장과 연계해 확장해서 사용할 수 있도록 폴딩도어를 설치해 행사 공간으로도 활용할 수 있도록 했다. 인테리어는 오픈 키친 개념으로 디자인하였으며, 인디언 핑크 계열의 컬러 벽과 자유로운 형태의 벽면 녹화 디자인을 통해 제한된 예산 안에서도 따뜻한 분위기를 연출하고자 최대한 노력했다. 직판장의 한쪽에는 나중에 추가된 반려식물 클리닉 공간이 있다. 이곳은 키우는 식물에 문제가 생겼을 경우 가져오면 진단과 조언을 받을 수 있는 서비스를 제공한다. 한 공간 안에 있으나 별도의 역할을 할 수 있도록 부스 형식을 도입하여 디자인했다.

1층의 체험 재배실에는 엽채류 재배기와 아쿠아포닉스 시설(물고기 배설물이 수경재배 식물의 영양분이 되는 시스템)이 있으며, 소규모 체험장이 함께 배치되어 있다. 2층에는 약 30명을 수용할 수 있는 대규모 체험장을 계획하였다. 박공지붕의 내부 공간을 살리고, 공간의 포인트가 되도록 녹색 포인트 벽을 디자인했다. 2·3층의 재배실은 전문 재배실로서 외기를 차단하는 전실이 계획됐다. 2층에는 딸기, 3층에는 버터헤드, 프릴 아이스, 카이피라, 이자트릭스 등의 엽채류가 재배된다.

건축, 인테리어 디자인뿐만 아니라, 안내 사인물 디자인과 로고 디자인까지 함께 수행하면서 매우 감사하고 의미 있었던 프로젝트였다. 단독 스마트팜 시설로서 좋은 사례를 남기고자 했고, 맞은편 이웃인 수송초등학교 어린이들에게 즐거운 건축적 경험을 제공하고자 노력했는데, 이러한 마음이 발주처에도 전해졌는지 개관식에서 표창장을 받았다. 여기에서 끝나는 것이 아니라, 지역 주민들에게 지속적으로 사랑받는 살아 있는 공공시설이 되었으면 하는 바람이다.

This project aimed to establish a Smart Farm Center for the local community on an underutilized site across from Susong Elementary School in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul. A smart farm refers to an agricultural facility that uses ICT (Information and Communication Technology) to maintain and manage optimal growing conditions for crops or livestock remotely and automatically. These include greenhouse-type smart farms, vertical farms, smart orchards, and smart livestock facilities. Among them, the Gangbuk Smart Farm Center is a plant factory using artificial light an enclosed, vertical multi-layered facility that enables year-round crop cultivation through controlled lighting, temperature, humidity, CO₂, and nutrient solution levels. The center was envisioned to contribute to the community by revitalizing urban agriculture, providing eco-friendly produce, creating jobs, and fostering a stronger sense of local identity.

The site was previously a dark, neglected space surrounded by tall, unhealthy trees, permanently in shadow. To breathe life into this expressionless environment, a series of sloped roofs was introduced, along with a bright tangerine-toned façade. The front facing Hancheon-ro was articulated with varied depths to soften the visual impact from the street, while also encouraging a natural flow for pedestrians.

The smart farm’s direct produce store on the ground floor was designed as an open, welcoming space where anyone could drop in for conversation or to purchase fresh vegetables. To allow for flexibility in use, folding doors were installed to expand the space for events in connection with the parking lot. The interior adopted an open kitchen concept, using Indian pink tones on the walls and incorporating organically shaped green wall designs to create a warm, inviting atmosphere within a limited budget. A small plant clinic space was later added to one side of the shop, offering advice and diagnosis for customers bringing in troubled houseplants. Though housed in the same space, it was designed as a booth with a distinct function.

The first floor also houses a hands-on growing room with leafy green cultivation systems and an aquaponics unit, where fish waste provides nutrients for hydroponic plants. A small-scale experience area was arranged here, while a larger space on the second floor accommodates up to 30 people. The interior of the gable roof was left exposed, and a green accent wall was used as a spatial focal point. The growing rooms on the second and third floors are specialized cultivation zones with vestibules to block outside air. Strawberries are grown on the second floor, while leafy greens such as butterhead lettuce, frill ice, kaipira, and ezatrix are cultivated on the third.

Beyond architecture and interior design, this project also included the development of signage and logo design making it a deeply meaningful and fulfilling endeavor. The aim was to create a model case for a stand-alone smart farming facility and to offer the children at Susong Elementary School across the street a joyful architectural experience. Perhaps that spirit was well received, as the project was awarded a commendation at the opening ceremony. More than just a conclusion, this building aspires to become a living, beloved public facility that continues to enrich the lives of local residents.
