바다와 맞닿은 주문진 오릿(Jumunjin Orit)
주문진 오릿은 바닷가와 맞닿은 개방된 코너 대지에 자리한다. 남쪽과 동쪽으로는 탁 트인 바다가, 서쪽으로는 저무는 해가 동시에 보이는 입지는 하루의 빛의 흐름을 가장 극적으로 담아낼 수 있는 장소였다. 이 특별한 조건은 건축 개념이 되었고, 형태를 규정하는 가장 강력한 지침이 됐다.

이곳의 건축은 숙박시설 그 이상의 의미로, 빛과 바다가 만들어내는 변화를 몸소 느낄 수 있는 ‘경험의 공간’을 지향한다. 모든 객실은 바다를 향해 열려 있으며, 창 너머로 이어지는 수평선은 사용자의 일상에 하루의 리듬과 자연의 질서를 환기시킨다.

각 객실은 바다 조망을 온전히 확보할 수 있도록 유선형 평면을 조합해 계획했다. 호스텔의 동측은 일출을 맞이하는 곡면 입면으로, 서측은 붉은 석양을 담아내는 깊은 프레임 구조로 마감해 시간에 따라 달라지는 빛의 각도가 건축 요소에 흡수되고 반응하도록 했다. 이는 자연의 시간성과 방향성을 공간적으로 담아낸 구성이다.

객실의 창은 풍경을 ‘보는’ 장치로서, 자연을 공간 깊숙이 끌어들이는 틀로 작동한다. 일부 스위트 객실은 욕조와 수평선이 맞닿는 방향으로 배치해, 일출에 눈을 뜨고 석양에 잠드는 하루의 여정을 고요히 품도록 했다. 4층 테라스에는 투명한 파라펫과 바다와 이어진 듯한 수영장을 두어, 해안선과 수면, 하늘이 하나로 이어지는 시각적 연속성을 경험할 수 있게 했다.

창문 사이에 설치된 알루미늄 루버는 음영 장치 이상의 역할을 한다. 사용자의 시점과 시간에 따라 끊임없이 변주되는 ‘움직이는 입면’으로 작동하며, 걷는 위치, 시간대, 기후에 따라 시선과 빛의 흐름이 달리 읽힌다. 건축은 고정된 형태가 아니라 감각의 스펙트럼을 담아내는 동적인 존재가 된다.

이 건축물은 ‘곡선’이라는 조형적 요소와 ‘수평성’이라는 공간적 감성을 통해 바다의 장소성과 자연의 흐름을 온전히 받아들인다. 물리적 경계, 시간의 이동, 빛의 변화가 하나의 구조 속에서 어우러지며, 이 공간에서 사용자는 잠자는 행위를 넘어 자연과 깊이 조우하는 경험을 한다.

Jumunjin Orit, Meeting the Sea
Jumunjin Orit is situated on an open corner site directly facing the sea.
With sweeping ocean views to the south and east, and sunsets visible to the west, this site captures the most dramatic transitions of daylight across a single day. This unique condition shaped not only the architectural concept, but also became the strongest directive guiding the building’s form.
More than just a place to stay, the architecture aspires to be a space of experience—where guests can feel the shifting light and the ever-changing sea with their entire body. Every room opens toward the water, and the horizon beyond the window subtly reintroduces the rhythm of the day and the order of nature into the lives of its occupants.
To ensure uninterrupted sea views, each unit was planned using a combination of streamlined, curved layouts. On the east, the hostel’s façade curves to embrace the sunrise; on the west, deep framed openings capture the red glow of the setting sun. These design elements absorb and respond to changing light angles throughout the day, embodying the natural passage of time and orientation through spatial composition.
Windows here function not only as visual devices but as portals that draw the landscape deep into the interior. Select suite rooms are oriented so that the bathtub and the horizon align—allowing guests to awaken with the sunrise and fall asleep in the soft hues of sunset. On the fourth-floor terrace, a transparent parapet and an infinity-edge pool evoke the sensation of merging with the sea, where the shoreline, water, and sky connect in a continuous visual flow.
Aluminum louvers installed between the windows serve more than just shading purposes. They act as a kinetic façade that constantly shifts with the user’s viewpoint and the time of day. Depending on one’s position, hour, or weather, the perception of light and sightlines continuously transforms—turning the architecture into a dynamic presence that captures a spectrum of sensations, rather than remaining a static form.
Through the sculptural use of curves and the emotional resonance of horizontality, this building fully embraces the essence of the sea and the flow of nature. Physical boundaries, the passage of time, and the dance of light are interwoven into a unified structure— where sleeping becomes more than rest, and the user encounters nature in its most intimate form.
