공중의 담장이 만드는 맥락적 형태
논현동의 4미터 이면도로에 접한 필지로 남쪽에서 진입하는 필지이다. 인접대지는 다세대 건물로 둘러싸여 있기에 시선 차단을 고려해야 하는 필지이다. 우리는 비건폐지 40%를 남쪽 전면도로와 동쪽필지 북쪽필지에 배분하고 각층 마다 필지를 두르는 문양콘크리트 공중담장으로 형태를 계획했다. 공중담장은 최대한 채워진 용적의 매스를 둘러싸는 형상을 하는데 일조사선으로 인해 층마다 둘러지는 영역과 형태가 다른 공중담장의 모습을 하게 된다. 비건폐지를 둘러싼 공중담장은 용적률의 부동산적 욕망과 법규 규제의 문제, 인접필지와의 경계문제를 해결하면서도 건축의 자율적 영역으로 생성되는 것이다.


공중 담장의 건축적 역능
둘러진 공중담장은 필지와의 경계에서 다양한 역할을 하게 된다. 남쪽 전면도로면의 공중담장은 도로 경계선과의 폭을 활용하여 층마다 엇갈린 벽으로 좁을 전면도로에서 다양한 깊이와 변화의 입면을 만들어내게 된다. 동쪽 필지와의 경계에서는 사이공간을 활용하여 수직동선이 배치된다. 공중담장 사이의 계단은 오르내리는 동선 속에서 수직적인 입체적 공간감을 체험하게 된다. 북쪽 필지와의 경계에서는 일조사선으로 생기는 테라스를 둘러싸면서 테라스 공간을 에워싸는 역할을 한다. 이처럼 공중담장은 형태생성의 동력, 도시가로의 입면, 필지경계의 시선 차단, 수직동선의 공간감, 테라스를 에워싸는 담장 등 다양한 건축적 능역을 수행하게 된다. 


도시가로와 이어지는 관계망
공중담장 사이공간에서 만들어지는 계단은 도시가로와 이어지면서 도시적적 관계망이 형성된다. 지하층으로 이어지는 계단은 도시가로에서 바로 이어지면서 지하2층까지의 보이드 공간과 함께 채광이 되는 공간감으로 지하층의 상업적 활용성을 더 높이게 된다. 2층으로 이어지는 계단은 안쪽으로 들어가 이어지는데 계단의 동선이 도시가로에서 보이면서 입체적인 시선의 교차와 공간감을 경험하게 된다. 공중담장으로 생성된 필지와의 경계는 계단의 관계망에 의해 더 이상 닫혀진 경계가 아니라 시선의 교류와 소통의 가능성으로 열린 경계가 된다.

Contextual Forms Created by Aerial Walls
This project is located in Nonhyeon-dong on a plot facing a 4-meter side street, accessible from the south. The site is
surrounded by multi-family buildings, requiring a design that considers visual obstruction and privacy. Approximately 40% of the non-building land is allocated to the southern, eastern, and northern plots, using patterned concrete aerial walls to encircle the plot (the building mass) on each floor. The aerial walls are designed to encircle the mass of the maximized volume. Due to the restrictions of architectural slant line for daylight and the diagonal plane control, the enclosed areas and specific shapes of these walls differ on each floor. The aerial walls surrounding the non-building land resolve the real estate desire for floor area ratio, legal regulations, and boundary issues with adjacent plots, while simultaneously creating an autonomous architectural domain. 


Architectural Power of Aerial Walls
The encircling aerial walls play various roles at the boundaries of the plot. By creating staggered, multi-depth walls on each floor aligned with the narrow road boundary, the walls create facades of varying depths and changes along the narrow front road. At the boundary with the eastern plot, the vertical route is arranged by utilizing interstitial space. The staircases between the aerial walls allow for the experience of a vertical, three-dimensional spatial sense through the route where one ascends and descends. At the boundary with the northern plot, the aerial walls act as enclosing
fences for terrace spaces designed specifically due to architectural slant line for the daylight. In this way, the aerial walls perform various architectural functions, including acting as a driving force for form generation, providing a facade for the urban street, blocking views of plot boundaries, enhancing the spatial sense of vertical routes, and serving as a fence that encloses the terraces. 


Network Connecting to the Urban Street
The stairs created in the interstitial spaces of aerial walls connect to the urban street, forming an urban network. The stairs leading down to the basement connect directly to the street, enhancing the commercial usability of the basement through a sense of space illuminated by natural light, alongside a void space extending down to the second basement level. The stairs leading to the second floor extend inwards from the edge, creating a staircase route that is visible from the street. This design provides a three-dimensional visual exchange and a sense of spatial depth. The closed boundary with the plot created by an aerial wall is replaced with an “open boundary” due to these stair networks, with the possibility of visual exchange and communication.
