역사문화도시 속의 호수변 대지
이 집의 대지는 한국의 대표적인 전통역사문화도시인 ‘전주’의 신도시 내 호수공원 변에 위치하고, 도심 자연 속에 새로이 개발된 전용주거타운 중심지이면서 호수를 바라보고 있다.

문화적 정체성
우리나라 전통문화를 사랑하는 건축주가 추구하는 문화적 성격에 부합하기 위해 전통 건축 문화의 요소를 현대적으로 도입하고자 했으며, 전통문화도시 전주의 정체성을 부여해 한국성 있는 현대적 건축으로 계획하기로 했다.

삶의 문 - Gate of Life
한국전통건축의 ‘누마루’를 도입한 ‘삶의 문’은 이 집을 대표하는 건축적 개념이며 공간적, 조형적 상징이 되었다. 이 문은 시시각각 변화하는 바깥세계의 자연과 도시의 살아있는 풍경을 연출하는 회화적인 건축적 뷰파인더이며, 폐쇄적이며 내향적인 삶의 도피처로서 바깥세상인 속세와 대화하는 상호소통의 ‘열린 문’인 동시에 외부시선의 침입을 여과하는 스크린이며, ‘개방된 벽’으로서 건축적 경계다.
또한 시시각각 변화하는 외부자연과 역동적인 현대도시의 일상적 풍경을 음미하는 전망대이며 가공된 자연인 마당의 시적 정서를 즐기는 치유적 휴식처로서, 막힘과 뚫림이 공존하는 복합적 프레임이다.

희망의 구름 ‘호운’
주인이 명명한 이 집의 이름인 ‘호운(湖雲)’은 ‘호수 위의 구름’을 의미하며, 이 집의 거실 위에 떠있는 구름 형상의 가족실은 가족 모두의 “희망”이 이루어짐을 기원하는 건축적 상징이다.
그들 모두의 행복한 미래를 기원한다.

A Lakeside Site in a Historic and Cultural City
The site of this house is located beside a lake park in a newly developed district of Jeonju, one of Korea’s most representative historic and cultural cities. It stands at the center of a newly planned residential town, surrounded by urban nature and facing the lake.

Cultural Identity
The client has a deep affection for Korean traditional culture. In response to this cultural sensibility, the design sought to reinterpret elements of traditional Korean architecture in a contemporary way. At the same time, the house was planned to reflect the identity of Jeonju, a city known as a place of culture and retreat. The aim was to create a modern architecture with a distinctly Korean character.

Gate of Life
The “Gate of Life,” inspired by the numaru of traditional Korean architecture, became the main architectural concept of the house, as well as its spatial and symbolic focus.
This gate acts as an architectural viewfinder, framing the everchanging scenes of nature and the living urban landscape outside. It is also an open door through which an inward-looking and sheltered place of life communicates with the outside world. At the same time, the gate works as a screen that filters views from outside. It is an architectural boundary, not as a closed wall, but as an “open wall.”
It is also an observatory from which one can appreciate the changing natural scenery and the everyday rhythm of the modern city. Facing the courtyard, an arranged form of nature, it becomes a healing place of rest where poetic emotions can be felt. In this way, the gate becomes a complex frame where openness and enclosure coexist. 

Houn, a Cloud of Hope
The name of the house, Houn(湖雲), was given by the owner and means “a cloud above the lake.”
The cloud-shaped family room floating above the living room is an architectural symbol of hope, expressing the family’s wish for their dreams to come true.
May this house become a place where the family’s happy future continues to unfold.
