융복합형 전시를 추구하고 있는 사비나미술관장 (이명옥)은 안국동의 전시공간보다는 넓은 전시공 간이 요구됨에 따라 부지매입·선정 단계부터 건축 주+건축사의 협업으로 프로젝트를 진행했다. 대 지는 몇 개의 부지중 도로와 진관내천으로 둘러싸 인 곳으로 선정했다.

 

삼각형 대지를 따라 건축물의 매스는 자연스럽게 삼각형 구도를 가지게 됐다. 삼각형은 변화와 융 합을 시도하는 사비나미술관의 특성과도 잘 부합 되어, 세 개의 모퉁이 공간에 삼각형의 보이드가 생겨났다. 보이드공간은 자연적 요소(빛과 공기) 유입 통로와 입구·수직이동 동선으로 계획하였으 며, 건축디테일까지도 연속된 언어로 사용했다. 사용된 재료는 백색의 고벽돌과 콘크리트만 사용 했다. 전시공간에는 1개의 기둥만으로 구현하여 재료와 구조적인 측면에서 간결함을 추구했다.

Endeavoring to explore a new radical multi-disciplinary themed exhibitions, the 22 year-old Savina Museum of Contemporary Art relocated to EunPyeong District, Seoul. With a clear objective, both the client and architect formed a unique collective bond as both set out to search for a site that could be a venue for the new museum. Upon their due diligence, a triangulated parcel was found between a 25 meter road and creek.

 

In response to the existing context and site attributes, the museum’s massing took on a triangulated form. Two of the three corners serves as vertical core while the other as a light well down to the main exhibition floor. Architectural languages and details continues with the usage of triangle theme whose characteristics resembles that of the museum itself.

 

The columns, walls, floors and ceilings are finished with exposed concrete while the façade is composed of brick veneer system using recycled white brick. Resting on one circular column and three loadbearing walls, the vertically stacked exhibition halls enable museum curators to explore endless possibilities.
