‘Seopae-dong’ is situated at the foot of Mt. Simhak and located on the site facing the northwest Han River. The first floor is designed to be ‘ㄷ’ shaped, and bamboo is planted across it to embrace the courtyard entirely. On the second floor, ‘|’ shaped mass for the access road, and on the third floor, ‘―’ shaped mass for the eastern house is stacked to hide gazes from the outside. And the external spaces created from alternative laying are considered to be utilized in a variety of ways.
The fence, garage, and first-floor mass are independently placed on the side of the access road so that the gaps in between can be used as entry spaces. When you enter, you can feel various textures and a sense of space depending on the material of each element, and it gives a glimpse of the courtyard in front of the entrance.
There are the living room, dining room · kitchen, stairwell, toilet, utility rooms, and entrance on the first floor. The living room, dining room · kitchen, and stairwell are separated by step height difference, but they are visually connected to make the first floor look wider. Utility rooms are partitioned by individual boxes and visually separated from the main functions by using different finishes. In addition, a front window is installed in the living room to bring the nature and light of the courtyard indoors and maximize openness. To blur the distinction between the interior and exterior, the ceiling finish of the living room is extended to the exterior eaves on the courtyard.
There are the guest room and the bathroom on the basement floor. A sunken space is placed in front of the bedroom to allow ventilation and light.
On the second floor, private and public spaces are separated by sliding doors. The personal areas include the bedroom, bathroom, and dressing room. In the bedroom and bathroom, windows facing the courtyard are installed to be visually connected with the yard, and there is a private terrace overlooking the Han River. In the shared space, a sub-kitchen is designed to communicate with the large shared terrace.
On the third floor, there are the client's bedroom and bathroom. Not to make the stairwell stuffy, a clerestory is installed on the upper part. The window overlooks the Han River when you enter the bedroom from the staircase, and the outdoor terrace is in front of a window to be as a water space. The bed sits towards the mountain, and a balcony is placed to give a buffer space with outdoor spaces. Finally, a skylight is installed on the upper part of the bathtub to provide vertical openness and natural light.
The client wanted to close the space against gazes from the outside, while the architect tried to open it towards light and nature. Thus, the Seopa-dong House was a record of coordination between opening and closing.
