건축주를 처음 만난 것은 2015년 봄이었다. 당시 평창동 소재의 한 토지를 매입하여 갤러리를 포함한 주택을 짓고자 했는데, 여러 가지 조건을 분석하여 상담에 응한 적이 있었다. 그 당시 이 노부부는 그 땅을 매입하지 못했고, 건축주와 설계자로서의 연을 맺지 못한 채 이메일로 인사를 주고받으며 헤어졌었다. 그 후 2017년 3월, 우리 사무실은 종로 서촌의 사무실을 떠나 마포 만리재고개로 이사를 하였는데 이사를 오자마자 이분들이 첫 의뢰인이 될 줄은 생각지도 못했다. 다시 찾아온 건축주 부부는 태안의 신두리 고향 땅에 둘이 지낼 작은 집을 의뢰했다. 2년 전 방문했을 때 우리가 보여준 친절함과 인상이 좋아서, 우리하고 꼭 다시 인연을 맺고 건축을 해야겠다고 마음먹었다고 했다. 이렇게 두 번째 만남으로 건축주와 설계자로서의 연은 이어졌다.

건축주 부부가 의뢰한 주택은 서울을 오가면서 살 집이었다. 부모님으로부터 물려받은 고향땅, 어려서 나고 자랐던 땅에 자신들의 여생의 일부를 내어주고 싶었던 모양이다. 처음 미팅 때 두 분이 집의 이름을 지어 오셨다. 집의 이름은 ‘서리재’. 서쪽 마을에 지어진 집이란 뜻과, 서씨와 이씨 부부가 사는 집이라는 뜻을 담았다. 남편 분은 설계를 의뢰한 그 해에 대학 강단에서 은퇴를 하였고, 집을 설계하는 과정 동안 아주 작은 의견을 구함에 있어서도 사무실을 자주 방문하는 열정을 보여주었다. 부인께서는 아프리카 토속 예술품을 모으는 취미가 있어 갖고 있는 소장품을 기준으로 집 내부를 꾸몄다. 입주 후에는 몇 개월가량 집안에서 지내면서 느낀 점들을 말하며, 서리재에서의 생활에 만족해하던 두 분의 모습이 지금도 눈에 선하다. 자녀들과 손자가 해외에서 거주하고 있는 이유로 그들에게 아직 집을 보여주지 못했다고 한다. 자녀들이 이 집을 방문할 때를 대비해서인지 건축주는 그날도 부지런하게 집 주위를 돌면서 정리하고 조경계획을 세우고 있었다.

지형을 고려한 배치계획
집이 지어질 토지는 도로보다 낮은 농지였다. 현황도로에서 경사지로 이어져 있는 농지를 전용하여 주택을 신축해야 하는 상황이었다. 일반적으로 대지로 토지의 용도가 변경이 될 경우에는 토지 전체를 옹벽으로 두르고 성토를 하여 가용할 수 있는 땅의 면적을 최대로 하는 경우가 대부분이지만, 서리재의 경우는 도로에서 진입이 가능한 대지의 레벨과 기존의 농지레벨에서 접근이 가능한 대지의 레벨 2개를 두기로 하였다. 첫 번째 이유는 기존 농지의 습한 환경이 주택에 미치는 영향을 최소로 하기 위해 집의 일부를 띄우는 것이었다. 두 번째는 불필요한 성토 면적을 줄이고 기존 지형을 최대한 유지하는 것. 세 번째는 진입마당과 아랫마당에 두 개의 외부 환경을 두어 쓰임이 다채로울 수 있게 하는 것이었다. 이렇게 토지를 활용함으로서, 작은 집이지만 쓰임이 다양하고 실내 환경에서 좀 더 확장된, 집으로서의 다양한 공간을 가질 수 있는 집이 되었다.

편의성과 거주환경을 고려한 ‘ㅡ’자형 주택
은퇴를 한 부부 건축주에게 집의 형태는 단순하고 효율적인 동선이 우선적으로 고려되어야 했다.  크게 세 부분으로 영역을 구분 지었는데, ①유틸리티 ZONE ②퍼블릭존 ③프라이빗 존으로 구분 지어서 평면 계획을 하였다. 유틸리티 존은 주차장을 중심으로 창고와 보일러실, 다용도실의 접근이 용이한 영역이고, 퍼블릭존은 진입마당과 앞마당의 접근이 용이한 중앙의 거실과 주방의 공간이다. 프라이빗 존은 침실과 욕실, 서재 등 집안에서도 어느 정도의 독립된 시간을 보낼 수 있는 장소이길 원했다. 심지어 욕실의 경우에는 어느 누구에게도 방해받지 않고 외부 조망을 바라보고 목욕시간을 즐길 수 있기를 바랐다. 마당에서 분리된 인공지반의 테라스 또한 프라이빗 존의 영역이다.

달라진 건축주의 일상
건축주 부부의 자녀는 미국에서 결혼하여 생활하고 있기 때문에, 일 년에 일정 기간은 미국으로 건너가 가족들이 모이는 시간을 가진다. 한국에 있을 때는 화상통화로 손주에게 새로 지은 집의 전경이라든가 실내의 모습을 보여주고, 언젠가는 다락방에서 신나게 놀 손주의 모습을 떠올린다. 때로는 서울에서의 일정도 소화를 해야 하기 때문에 서울을 오가는 일정도 상당 기간 있지만, 고향땅에 지은 집에서의 삶을 통해 일상의 소소한 즐거움을 누리고 있다. 어느새 마당에는 틈틈이 손수 나무를 심고, 조경작업도 하면서 전원생활에 익숙해져 있는 듯하였다.

대한민국 서쪽 마을과 서해바다, 그리고 서씨와 이씨 부부가 사는 집이라는 이름이 절묘하다.

I first met the client in the spring of 2015. At that time, the client was going to purchase a piece of land in Pyeongchang-dong to build a house, including a gallery, and we responded to the consultation by analyzing many conditions. But, unfortunately, the old couple could not purchase the land in the end, so we couldn't work on it just by exchanging farewells by e-mail without forming a relationship as the client and the designer. Then, in March 2017, our office moved to Mallijae Gogae in Mapo from Seochon, Jongno, and we never imagined that they would be our first client as soon as we moved in.
The client couple, who revisited us, requested a small house for the two of them in the hometown of Sinduri in Taean. They said they decided to build a relationship with us again. They liked the kindness and impression we showed when they visited us two years ago. Therefore, we could continue our relationship between the client and the designer through this second meeting.

The client couple requested a house to live in a while moving to and from Seoul. It seemed that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives in the land they inherited from their parents in their hometown or the ground where they were born and raised.
At the first meeting, they named the house. The house’s name is ‘Seorijae.’ It contains the meaning of a house built in a western village and a house where the Seo and the Lee couple live. The husband retired from the university in the year he requested the design. He showed a passion for visiting our office often, even in seeking a small opinion while designing the house.

His wife has a hobby of collecting African artifacts, so we decorated the interior using her collection. We still remember the couple who were satisfied with their life in Seorijae, talking about what they felt while staying in the house for several months after moving in.
The couple said they haven't yet shown the house to their children and grandchildren because they live abroad. Perhaps in preparation for the children's visit to this house, the client diligently went around the house that day, tidying up and making a landscaping plan.

The land on which the house would be built was farmland lower than the road. At the moment, the farmland connected to a slope had to be converted to create a new house. In general, when land use is changed like this case, people choose to create a retaining wall along with the entire site to maximize the usable land area. Still, in the case of Seorijae, we decided to put two levels: the level of the land accessible from the road and the level of the land accessible from the existing farmland level.

The first reason was to float part of the house to minimize the impact of the moist environment of the existing farmland on the house. The second is to reduce the unnecessary filling area and maintain the existing topography as much as possible. The third was to put two external environments in the entrance and lower yards to offer various uses. Using the land in this way has become a house that is more expanded in an indoor environment with many spaces and multiple uses, although it is a small house.

The house's efficient and straightforward movement flow should be a priority for the retired couple. The area was largely divided into three parts for floor planning: ①Utility Zone ②Public Zone ③Private Zone
The Utility Zone is an area with easy access to a warehouse, a boiler room, and a utility room centering on the parking lot. The Public Zone is for a central living room and kitchen with easy access to the entrance and front yards. The Private Zone was for spending some time independently in the house, such as a bedroom, bathroom, and study. Even in the bathroom, we wanted them to enjoy the bath time with an outside view without being disturbed by anyone. The artificial ground terrace separated from the yard is also a private zone.

The client's daily life has changed
Since the client couple's children are married and live in the United States, they sometimes go to the United States to get together per year. When they are in Korea, they show their grandchildren the view of the new house or the interior through a video call,  thinking of the grandchildren who will one day have fun in the attic. Sometimes they have to go to and from Seoul for a long time due to their schedule in Seoul, but they feel small but sure happiness of everyday life in the house in their hometown. It seems that they have become accustomed to rural life by planting trees in the yard in their spare time and doing landscaping work.
