닫힌집, 열린집.
-고향으로 회귀하는 이를 위한 주택

고향
지금 우리 사회는 자신의 인생을 열심히 살아온 많은 이들이 은퇴 또는 노후 준비를 하고 있다. 그들 중 몇몇은 고향으로 돌아가서 남은 자신의 인생을 살아보고자 고민하는 이들이 있을 것이다. 이 주택은 울산의 도심에서 열심히 인생을 살아온 건축주 부부가 고민 끝에 남편의 시골 고향으로 돌아가 주택을 지어 살면서 고향 마을에 의미 있는 일을 하고자 하는 계획을 가지고 출발한 프로젝트이다.

집 그리고 문학관
건축주는 도심의 삶을 좋아하고 시골의 삶을 낯설어 한다. 시골의 삶에서 가장 두려워하는 것은 안전이었다. 설계 의뢰 당시 가장 중요하게 생각한 것이 타인이 집안을 쉽게 보거나 들어 올 수 없는 구조였다. 동시에 아이로니컬하게도 집에 사람들을 초대하는 것을 좋아하고, 항상 음식을 해서 많은 사람들과 나누어 먹는다고 한다. 건축주 남편은 직업 외에 시를 쓴다. 시집도 출간한 적이 있고, 나이가 들면 조용한 곳에서 시를 쓰고자 하는 꿈이 있다. 이곳 은편리는 건축주 남편의 고향으로, 만약 늙어서 이 집에 살 수가 없을 경우 집을 문학관으로 전환하여 많은 이들에게 문화공간으로 남기고자 하는 계획을 갖고 있었다. 

닫힌 집
건축주는 설계당시에도 몇 번이나 집을 짓는 것을 포기할까 고민하였다. 안전에 대한 불안감 때문이었다. 그래서 밖에서는 철저하게 닫힌 집을 제안하고자 하였다. 전원에 집을 짓는데 닫힌 집이라는 구조를 가졌지만 내부에서는 열린 구조를 만들고자 하였다. 대지의 향이 좋지 않다. 남쪽으로 높은 산이 있고 서쪽으로 열린 논이 보인다. 조망은 서향을 향할 수밖에 없다. 그래서 서쪽으로 대지의 특성을 반영한 18미터의 아주 긴 벽을 만들었으며, 이곳에서 건축주는 원하는 손님들을 맞이하여 잔치를 할 수도 있고 문학관으로 기능이 바뀔 때는 문화 행사를 집행할 수 있는 기능을 수반할 수 있도록 하였다. 또한 주방 옆에 있는 외부중정은 벽으로 인하여 서향 햇빛을 어느 정도 가릴 수 있도록 하였다.  

열린 집
집 안에 들어오면 집 밖에서 보는 모습과 완전히 다른 열린 공간을 느끼게 된다. 안방 하나를 제외하고 모든 공간의 구획을 없앤 열린 집을 제안하였다. 그리고 이 공간들을 나누는 구획은 외부공간이다. 현관에 들어서면 황토방에 불을 지피는 아궁이가 있는 비어 있는 외부공간이 있다. 왼쪽으로 고개를 돌리는 순간 모든 공간은 서로 중첩되어 있으며 하나로 연결되어 있다. 외부와 내부가 서로 중첩되게 하여 하늘에서 떨어지는 빛이 내부공간에 교차되도록 만들었다. 긴 형상의 대지 특성을 반영하여 내부 공간에 삽입된 외부공간은 계속해서 한 방향으로 확장되면서 열린 집을 만든다. 열린 공간을 만들기 위해 내부에는 어떤 벽체와 기둥도 만들지 않기 위하여 역보를 통해 모든 구조를 해결하였다. 건축주 남편이 시를 쓰고자 할 때나 손님이 왔을 때 또는 필요할 때는 가변형 벽체를 이용하여 공간을 나눌 수 있다. 이렇게 구획된 공간 또한 내부 중정으로는 열려 있다. 안방, 주방, 거실은 공간감의 확장을 위하여 층고를 높게 하고 고창을 두어 앉거나 누워 있으면 산의 나무와 하늘이 보이도록 하였다.
열린 집은 추후 문학관으로 기능이 바뀌었을 때도 열린 공간으로 방문자들을 맞이할 것이다.

시골의 고향으로 집을 지어 회귀하여 얼마 살지 않고 다시 도심으로 돌아가는 이들이 많이 있다. 무엇이 그들에게 필요한지, 어떤 공간들이 그들에게 지속가능한 고향에서의 삶을 윤택하게 만들 것인지 ‘닫힌집, 열린집’이 하나의 대안이 되었으면 한다.

- House for those returning to their hometown

Hometown
Many people who have had an enthusiastic life are now preparing for retirement or old age. However, some of them hope to return to their hometown after retirement for the rest of their lives. This house is a project started by the couple working hard in the city center of Ulsan, with a plan to return to her husband's rural hometown, build a house, and do something meaningful to his hometown village, which they've decided after a long consideration.

Home & Literature Center
The client likes urban life and is unfamiliar with rural life. The biggest fear in rural life was safety. At the time of design request, the most important thing to consider was the structure in which others could not easily see or enter the house. At the same time, ironically, he said he likes to invite people to his house and always cooks food and shares it with many people. He writes poetry other than his job. He once published a collection of poems and dreams of writing poetry in a quiet place when he gets older. This area is Eunpyeon-ri, the male client's hometown, and he has a plan to convert the house into a literature center and leave it as a cultural space for many people if he is too old to live in this house.

Closed House
Even at the time of design, the client considered giving up building a house so many times. It was because of safety concerns. So, we wanted to propose a house that was completely closed from the outside. We built a house in the countryside, which had the structure of a closed house, but we wanted to create an open structure for the inside. The views of the site are not good. A high mountain in the south and open rice fields in the west. The view cannot but face the west. We made a very long wall of 18 meters to the west, reflecting the site's characteristics so that the client can welcome guests and hold a feast, and it can serve as a place for cultural events even if its function is changed to a literature center. In addition, the outdoor courtyard next to the kitchen was designed to block the sunlight to some extent due to the wall.

Open House
When you enter the house, you feel an open space utterly different from what you see outside the home. We proposed an open house in which all areas were removed except for one main bedroom. And the partition dividing these spaces is the outdoor space. When you enter the front door, there is an empty outdoor space with a furnace where you make a fire in the red clay room. The moment you turn your head to the left, all the spaces overlap each other and are connected as one. The exterior and interior overlap, so that light from the sky intersects with the indoor space. Reflecting the long shape of the site, the outdoor space inserted into the indoor space continues to expand in one direction to create an open house. To create an open space, all structures were solved through an upper beam, not to install any walls and columns inside. When he wants to write a poem, when he welcomes a guest or needs it, he can divide the space using a movable wall. This partitioned space is also open to the indoor courtyard. For the main bedroom, kitchen, and living room, the floor height was designed to be high to expand the sense of space, and tall windows were placed so that when sitting or lying down, the trees and the sky of the mountain could be seen.
The open house will welcome visitors as an open space even if the function is later changed to a literature center.
Many people go back to their hometowns in the countryside but return to the city after a short period. We hope that ‘closed house, open house’ will become an alternative to what they need and what spaces will enrich their sustainable life in their hometown.
