신혼 초 살던 동네의 교회에 나가기 시작했다. 교회는 2002년 본관 개축을 계획하며 다방면으로 건축사사무소와 시공사를 알아보던 중인 것 같았다. 때마침 근처 대지의 별동 교육관 건축 계획안을 건축주에게 보여드린 게 계기가 되어 본관 계획을 요청받게 되었다. 
‘교회란 무엇인가’라는 생각은 나에게 항상 어려운 숙제였던 게마인샤프트(Gemeinschaft), 게젤샤프트(Gesellschaft)에 대해 다시금 고민하게 만들었다. 늘 그랬지만, 본능적으로 계획안을 스케치하고 또 하루 이틀 생각하고 또 스케치하며 반복되는 시간이 흘렀다. 앙상한 갈비뼈처럼 골조를 드러내는 형태에 집착하며 몇 가지 안을 만들어 제안했다. 그날 건축주가 망설임 없이 계획안을 선택하면서, 나머지 설계가 순조롭게 진행되었다. 
지금에 와서 보면 내 의지와 상관없이 일부 다른 모습으로 내·외부 증축이 진행되어 많이 안타깝지만, 나에겐 밤을 하얗게 지새운, 정말 소중한 과정을 겪은 첫 건축물이었다. 
지금도 아직 그때의 열정을 간직하고 작업 중이며, 또 다른 강한 의지가 표출되는 다음 건축물 작업을 기대해 본다. (사진자료 : 2013년 1차 증축 후)

초기 스케치

 

I began attending a local church in the neighborhood where I lived during the early days of my marriage. Around 2002, the church was planning to reconstruct its main building and was exploring various architects and contractors. By chance, I had shown the church owner a plan for an annex educational building on a nearby plot, which led to me being asked to plan the main building as well.
The question, “What is a church?” has always been a challenging concept for me, prompting me to reconsider ideas of Gemeinschaft (community) and Gesellschaft (society). As usual, I instinctively sketched plans, pondered over them for a day or two, and sketched some more, repeatedly over time. I became obsessed with a design that exposed the structure like bare ribs and proposed several options. The church owner chose one of the plans without hesitation, and the rest of the design process went smoothly.
Looking back, it’s regrettable that some parts of the church have been altered or expanded internally and externally without my involvement, but it remains a very precious project to me as it was my first and involved many sleepless nights. I still carry the passion from those days in my current work and look forward to bringing another strong vision to life in my next architectural endeavor. (Photo from the first expansion in 2013)
