Sejong JungMun Church

프롤로그
모든 것이 새롭고 잘 정리된 도시 세종, 하지만 2018년 자살률 증가 1위 도시로 꼽히면서 화려한 도시에 감춰진 어두운 이면과 마주하게 된다.
이방인과 같은 도시에서 마음을 나눌 수 있는 단 한명의 친구같은 존재로, 누구나, 언제든지 있는 모습 그대로 찾아올 수 있는 교회로서의 사명감으로 세종중문교회 건축은 시작되었다.
믿는 자들만을 위한 교회가 아니라 누구나 편히 다가설 수 있는 교회, 내 이웃과 같은 교회를 만들기 위해 교회라는 경계(보이지 않는 담)를 허무는 것에 설계의 주안점을 두었다.

경계 없이 열린 공간
바실리카, 비잔틴, 로마네스크, 고딕양식 등 역사적으로 교회건축은 시대마다 다른 양식으로 건축돼 왔다. 교권이 가장 강력했던 중세시대 양식이 우리의 인식 속에 교회건축의 아이콘으로 자리 잡으면서, 이러한 상징적 이미지들이 지금까지도 교회건축을 나타내는 여러 요소로 사용되고 있다.
우리의 인식 속에 고착된 기존 교회건축의 이미지 대조(수직적/수평적, 화려함/단순함, 상징/비상징, 매시브/보이드 등)를 통해 형태적 경계를 허물고 교회의 영역을 확장시키고자 했다.
대지에 인접한 공원의 산책로 또는 전면도로에서 접근 가능한 여러 개의 진·출입구를 통해 누구나 편히 찾아올 수 있는 경계 없이 열린 공간으로 계획하고자 했다.

교회를 넘어 지역공동체로
교회의 사명이 그리스도의 복음을 전파하고 하나님의 나라를 확장하는 것이라면, 그리스도 공동체(에클레시아)가 지역사회 공동체를 품는 공간으로 나아가야 한다.
그러기 위해 지역 공동체를 품을 수 있는 다양한 프로그램과 공간을 배치하고 각각의 공간은 복합적이고 유기적으로 사용할 수 있도록 계획했다.
음악회나 공연을 할 수 있는 다목적 예배당, 지역 주민을 위한 휴게마당과 수공간, 북까페, 아이들을 위한 키즈존, 다목적체육관 등등…….
세종중문교회가 하나님을 향한 예배와 일상의 삶이 공존하는 공간으로, 교회를 넘어 지역사회를 품고 이 시대 지친 영혼의 안식처가 되길 소망한다.

Sejong, a new and well-organized city, but the Stranger City is considered the No. 1 city in the increase in suicide rates in 2018, facing the dark side hidden in the gorgeous city.
The architecture of Sejong Jungmun Church began with a sense of mission as a church where anyone can come as they are at any time, as the only friend who can share their hearts in a city like a stranger.
The main focus of the design was on breaking down the boundary (invisible wall) of the church to create a church like my neighbor, a church that anyone can approach comfortably, not just for the believers.

open space without boundaries
Historically, church architecture has been built in different styles from time to time, including the basilica, Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic styles. The medieval style, which was the most powerful in authority, has become an icon of church architecture in our perception, these symbolic images have been used as various elements to represent church architecture.
By contrasting the images of existing church architecture fixed in our perception (vertical/horizontal, flashy/simple, symbolic/nonsymbol, mashive/void, etc.), it was intended to break down the morphological boundaries and expand the church’s territory.
It was intended to be an open space without boundaries that anyone could visit comfortably through several entrances accessible from the park promenade and front road adjacent to the site.

Beyond the church to the local communities
If the church’s mission is to spread the gospel of Christ and expand the kingdom of God, the Christian community (ecclesia) should move toward a space that embraces the local community.
To this end, various programs and spaces that can embrace the local community were arranged, and each space was planned to be used complexly and organically.
A multipurpose chapel for concerts and performances, a resting yard and water space for local residents, a book cafe, a kids zone for children, a multi-purpose gymnasium, etc…….
It is a space where worship for God and daily living coexist, and I hope that it will be a haven for the exhausted soul of this era, embracing the community beyond the church.
