대상지를 방문할 때마다 내비게이션은 우연하게도 금산군 비례리에 위치한 대지에서 거리가 다른 세 도로를 순차적으로 달리며 다른 관점에서 공간을 경험할 수 있도록 안내했다. 대지를 평화롭게 감싸며 연속적으로 이어지는 산세와 그 사이 움푹하게 들어간 골짜기에 자리한 기존 교회와 주변 논밭, 마을에 가까이 다가서면 생동감과 일상의 풍요로움이 드러났다.
비례교회는 1954년 창립된 역사 깊은 개신교 장로교회로, 수십 년 동안 제자리를 지킨 소나무와 측백나무들이 둘러싼 양지 좋은 곳에 자리 잡은 아담한 교회이다. 비례교회는 예배를 위한 신앙적 공간이면서도, 비례리 마을회관과 마당을 공유하며 동네 주민들이 편하게 모여 이야기를 나누거나 쉬어가는 마을 공동체를 포용하는 공간이다. 기존 예배당과 교육관이 노후화되어 사택과 주차장이 있던 현재 부지에 예배당, 교육관, 사택을 통합한 새로운 비례교회를 계획하게 됐다. 신축 이후에도 기존 교회 건물은 유지해 다른 용도로 활용할 예정이다.

교회 인근으로는 논과 밭을 일구며 생활하는 마을 생활권이 형성되어 있다. 단층의 주택들이 대부분이고, 박공지붕의 전형적인 농가가 밀집한다. 서쪽에서부터 이어지는 지봉산 줄기는 대상지를 둘러싸고 있다. 지봉산 골짜기에 마을이 형성됐으며, 교회는 마을의 중심에 위치한다. 교회의 동쪽, 남쪽으로는 비교적 평탄한 농지가 펼쳐져 있다.

마을길로 100미터 정도 들어오면 길 양옆으로 오랜 세월 자리를 지킨 적벽돌 교회와 신축된 콘크리트 교회가 위치한다. 좌측으로 돌아서면 대지의 끝에 위치한 교회의 콘크리트 벽과 마주하게 된다. 골패턴의 그림자를 드리운 수직 벽면과 상대적으로 미끈한 노출콘크리트 벽은 틈을 만들고 사람들을 인도한다. 

교회로 걸어가다 보면 육중한 벽 사이에 가려져 있던 출입구가 드러난다. 출입구 상부 캐노피에서부터 시작되는 안정감 있는 콘크리트 처마는 마당까지 이어지고, 그 아래에는 주변 자연을 투영하며 실내와 실외를 연결하는 열린 입면이 위치한다. 수직으로 솟아 있는 육중한 볼륨과 내부 공간을 드러내는 수직창이 대비를 이루면서도 3개 층을 하나로 엮어낸다.         

교회는 단정한 세 개의 콘크리트판이 적층되고, 이를 받치고 있는 부피감 있는 벽과 기둥으로 구성된다. 성격이 다른 세 가지 프로그램(1층 교육관, 2층, 예배당, 3층 사택)은 묵직한 콘크리트 판 아래에 위치하며, 주변으로의 시선과 막힘, 열림의 정도를 조정하며 외부공간과의 관계를 설정한다. 수평적으로 분절해 쌓아 올린 콘크리트 볼륨은 병풍과 같은 흐르는 산세와 잔잔하게 펼쳐진 논밭과 조화를 이룬다. 콘크리트 구조물은 빛의 변화에 따라 서로에게 그림자를 드리우며 볼륨감을 시시각각 달리한다. 

교회 1층은 종교 활동을 보조하고 교육, 강연 등 다목적으로 사용 가능한 공간이다. 목양실, 청년부실과 식당, 소예배당을 배치해 모임과 친교를 위한 공간으로 계획되었다. 청년부실과 식당 사이 복도는 유리월로 계획해, 식당에서 마당까지 시각적으로 열려 소통하는 공간이 되도록 했다. 2층에는 예배당이 위치한다. 기존 교회의 박공 지붕을 예배당 내부에 노출콘크리트 박공 천장으로 담고, 벽은 따뜻한 색감의 우드톤 흡음 보드로 마감했다. 파노라마로 펼쳐진 풍광을 향해 열린 베란다를 예배당 동측면에 계획하여, 실내로 자연광을 은은하게 유입하고 자연의 변화를 내부에서도 느낄 수 있도록 했다. 3층은 목사님 부부를 위한 사택이 위치한다. 남측으로 배치한 개방감 있는 전면창 밖으로 콘크리트 지붕과 근경, 원경에 나지막하게 펼쳐진 자연이 겹쳐지며 평온한 분위기가 연출된다.

Biryeri Church: A Layered Landscape of Faith and Community
Each visit to the site in Biryeri, Geumsan-gun led the navigation system along a different route—three distinct roads offering unique perspectives of the land. As the car sequentially traveled these paths, the peaceful terrain revealed its continuous mountain ridges gently embracing the site and a valley nestled in between. Approaching the site more closely, one encountered the existing church surrounded by rice fields and farmland, and felt the vivid energy and richness of everyday rural life.
Founded in 1954, Biryeri Church is a small yet long-standing Presbyterian church located on a sunny slope, embraced by pine and arborvitae trees that have stood in place for decades. Beyond serving as a spiritual space for worship, the church also functions as a communal space, sharing its courtyard with the Biryeri Village Hall—welcoming neighbors for conversation, rest, and gatherings. With the aging of the existing sanctuary and education building, a new complex was planned on the site of the former parsonage and parking area, integrating a new sanctuary, education center, and parsonage. The old church building will be retained and repurposed for other community uses. 

The church sits at the heart of the village, which is made up of mostly single-story homes and typical gabled-roof farmhouses. To the west, Mount Jibong stretches around the site, forming the backdrop of the village nestled in its valley. To the east and south, the landscape opens up to relatively flat farmland. 

Approaching the church along a 100-meter village path, one encounters the old red-brick church and the newly constructed concrete church positioned side by side. Turning left at the end of the path brings one face-to-face with a tall concrete wall—the new church’s rear façade. Deep vertical grooves cast sharp shadows on the surface, contrasting with the smoother exposed concrete, forming a subtle gap that draws visitors in. 

As one walks toward the church, the entrance—once hidden between massive walls—gradually reveals itself. A concrete canopy begins at the entry and extends outward, forming a generous eave that connects to the courtyard. Beneath it, an open glass façade reflects the surrounding landscape and blurs the boundary between interior and exterior. A vertical window punctures the tall volume, offering a glimpse into the inner spaces and tying together the building’s three levels. 

The new church is composed of three stacked concrete slabs, supported by thick walls and columns. Each of the three distinct programs—education center on the first floor, sanctuary on the second, and parsonage on the third—is placed beneath these slabs. Their spatial relationships to the outdoors are carefully mediated through orientation, openness, and controlled views. Horizontally layered, the massing harmonizes with the flow of the surrounding mountain ridges and the tranquil expanse of rice paddies. The interplay of light and shadow on the concrete surfaces continually reshapes the perception of form throughout the day. 

The first floor is a flexible space for community and educational use, supporting both religious activities and gatherings. It includes a pastor’s office, youth room, dining hall, and a small chapel. The corridor between the youth room and dining area is enclosed in glass, visually connecting the interior to the courtyard and encouraging interaction.
On the second floor sits the sanctuary. Its exposed concrete gabled ceiling echoes the roofline of the original church, while the walls are finished in warm wood-toned acoustic panels. A wide veranda opens to the east, offering panoramic views of the landscape and softly bringing natural light into the worship space—allowing congregants to sense the passing of time and seasonal change even from within. 
The third floor houses the parsonage for the pastor and spouse. Large south-facing windows offer layered views—across the concrete rooftop, over nearby fields, and out to the distant mountains—creating a calm, contemplative living environment.
