산세로 스며드는 공간
지리산의 천왕봉, 반야봉, 노고단 등을 비롯한 지리산 전경을 한눈에 볼 수 있는 정령치, 하늘전망대(이하 정령치 전망대)는 해발 1,172미터에 위치한다. 인근에는 사계절 물이 마르지 않는 기원전 1690년경에 생성된 습지가 있다.

1990년 정령치 전망대보다 남쪽에 자리한 성삼재 주차장을 조성하며 나온 토석을 운반해 현재의 정령치 전망대 부지가 조성됐고, 1995년 첫 정령치 휴게소가 건립됐다. 국립공원 내에 휴게소를 마련한 국내 최초의 사례로, 국내에서 참고할 만한 작업이 없었기에 해외 국립공원 휴게소 건축을 참고해 돔 형태의 목구조로 준공한 것으로 추측된다. 시간이 흘러 정령치 휴게소는 내진성능 평가에서 붕괴위험 평가를 받았고, 철거 예정 후 부지 내 다른 위치에 개축을 하게 됐다.

새롭게 들어선 정령치 전망대에서는 해외 국립공원 휴게소 건축을 참고했던 기존 휴게소의 문법을 지워내고, 우리의 산세와 조화를 이뤄낼 만한 새로운 공간을 새겨 넣으려 했다. 자연을 이겨내는 건축이 아니라 그 안에 묻힌 건축물이 되어 자연을 숭고하게 받들어낼 수 있는 형체가 되기를 바랐다.

건축물은 지면에서부터 올라선 것이 아닌 경사면에 내려앉은 자세를 취하고 있다. 부지에 들어서면 방문객은 눈높이에 놓인 건물의 지붕으로 인해 산을 직면하지 못하고, 계단을 따라 내려가면서 서서히 산을 만나게 된다. 내려서며 만나는 산이 부지 레벨에서 바라보던 산보다 더 가깝게 느껴지기를 원했다. 이러한 계획안을 공공기관에서 수용해 줄 수 있을지 확신이 없었는데, 지리산국립공원전북사무소는 새로운 시도를 반기며 적극 지지해 주었다. 발주처의 건축에 대한 이해가 없었다면 공공 건축물 설계를 진행하면서 겪는 일반적인 어려움에 부딪혔을 터이고, 이와 같은 결과물은 얻지 못했을 것이다.

건축물은 방문객들을 위한 화장실과 휴게소 및 관리사무소의 역할을 한다. 여러 개로 나뉜 매스와 지붕들은 마치 바람에 밀린 듯 자연스레 앉아 있다. 각각의 다양한 프로그램을 담은 독립적인 매스들은 수평으로 이어지며 전개되고, 그 틀 안에서 자유롭게 배치되며 다채로운 외부 공간을 만들어 낸다. 매스들은 각 용도에 따라 다양한 높이를 갖는데, 레벨이 다양한 여러 개의 지붕들도 서로 엮이는 듯 중첩되면서 수평선을 이루고 있다. 이러한 지붕들은 겹겹이 쌓인 산의 모습과 마주하며, 자연물과 건조물 간 대조가 되는 듯하면서도 조화롭게 자리한다. 또한 빗물과 건물을 분리시키고 싶지 않았기에 각 지붕 슬래브 사이에 좁은 보이드를 주었다. 그 개구부를 통해 빗물은 바닥으로 그대로 떨어져 내리게 된다. 비가 내리는 날, 작은 폭포수를 볼 수 있도록.

건물이 드러나지 않는 모습을 취하기 위해 전체적으로 회색 톤을 적용했고, 가급적 줄눈이 없는 하나의 석재로 된 느낌을 주기 위해 스톤 미장을 적용해 모노리스(monolith)하게 표현하고자 했다. 구조 계산에 의한 다양한 크기의 보를 정리하지 않고 그대로 적용한 입면은 현대식 산사와 같은 느낌을 주기도 하며, 마치 지리산의 바람을 그대로 맞아 휘어진 소나무와 같은 모습처럼 보이기도 한다.

바람에 밀린 듯한 지붕과 벽이 받아낸 지리산의 빛과 그림자들은 이곳을 방문하는 이들에게 정령치, 그 풍경의 하나로 남을 것이다.

A Space That Settles into the Mountain
The Jeongryeongchi Sky Observatory, perched at 1,172 meters above sea level, offers sweeping views of Mount Jirisan’s iconic peaks-Cheonwangbong, Banyabong, Nogodan, and more. Nearby lies a rare wetland, formed around 1690 BCE, which has never dried out across the seasons.
The current observatory site was established in the 1990s, using soil and rock excavated during the construction of the Seongsamjae parking lot to the south. The first Jeongryeongchi rest stop was completed in 1995-Korea’s first such facility within a national park. Lacking domestic precedents, the design was likely influenced by rest facilities in overseas national parks, resulting in a dome-shaped timber structure.
Over time, the building was deemed structurally unsafe due to poor seismic performance. It was dismantled and replaced by a new observatory in a different part of the site.
In designing the new observatory, we sought to erase the architectural language borrowed from foreign models and instead inscribe a new spatial identity rooted in our own mountainous terrain. Rather than competing with nature, we aimed for a building that humbly settles into it—a form that reveres and reflects the landscape.
The structure does not rise proudly from the earth; instead, it adopts a posture of quiet descent into the slope. Upon arrival, visitors are first met with the roofline, not the mountain itself. Only by descending the stairs do they gradually come face to face with the vast landscape. This descent was designed to bring the mountain closer—physically and emotionally—than it seemed from the approach. While unsure whether such a concept would be accepted in the public sector, the Jirisan National Park Office in Jeonbuk welcomed and supported the idea wholeheartedly. Without the client’s architectural understanding, the usual challenges of public projects might have prevented this outcome.
The facility accommodates restrooms, a shelter, and a small management office. The masses are divided and gently scattered, as if shaped by wind. Independent volumes housing distinct programs are horizontally arranged, freely composed to create diverse outdoor spaces. These masses vary in height, and their overlapping rooflines echo the layered mountain ridges surrounding them. Though contrasting with the natural forms, the structure finds harmony through its rhythm and scale.
To integrate rain into the architectural experience rather than repel it, narrow voids were inserted between roof slabs, allowing rainwater to fall freely to the ground—creating small, waterfall-like moments on rainy days.
To make the building less conspicuous, a subdued grey tone was applied throughout. Stone-textured plaster was used to evoke a monolithic presence, minimizing joint lines. The unpolished elevations—featuring exposed beams of varying depths based on structural needs—evoke the feel of a modern-day mountain temple, or even a wind-shaped pine bent by years of enduring Jirisan’s harsh elements.
The shadows and light that shift across the wind-swept roofs and walls will leave visitors with the impression that this structure, too, is part of Jeongryeongchi’s eternal landscape.
