건축물부문│민간부문 본상<MAIN PRIZE>

현대자동차그룹 영남권 교육시설은 현대자동차 울산공장 조합 근로자를 위한 경주캠퍼스와 협력사 임원진을 위한 글로벌 상생협력센터 두 연수원으로 구성 된다. ‘ㄱ’ 자와 ‘ㄴ’ 자 형태의 두 연수원은 각각의 방향성을 지니면서도, 공동 의 목표를 상징적으로 표현하기 위해 ‘ㅁ’ 자형으로 배치되었다. 이는 구심적 으로 수렴하는 동시에 독립적이고 자율적인 관계를 형성하여, 하나의 조화로 운 연수원 단지를 완성한다.

대지는 경주시 양남면 하서리 해안 언덕에 위치하며, 동쪽과 남쪽으로는 바다 와 해변의 조망이 열리고, 북쪽과 서쪽으로는 낮은 야산에 둘러싸여 사방으로 경관이 수려하다. 북측의 산세는 교육의 시작을 알리는 진입마당의 배경이 되 며, 울산공장 방향인 남쪽 바다를 향해 식당을 배치하여 교육의 마무리이자 대 화와 교류의 공간으로 계획하였다.

현대그룹이 건설에서 출발한 개척정신을 공간적으로 표현하기 위해, 숙소 영 역에는 50미터가 넘는 무주(無柱) 공간과 15미터의 캔틸레버 구조를 적용하 였다. 이러한 구조적 도전은 단순한 기술적 성취를 넘어, 경주의 산과 바다가 어우러진 풍경과 결합하여 강한 장소성을 형성한다.

심사평

본사의 산업시설이 내려다보이는 어느 바닷가의 구릉지에 근로자를 위한 시설 이 자리 잡는다. 교육을 위한 시설이지만 휴양의 개념을 가지며 멋진 리조트의 인상을 갖고 있다. 상반된 성격의 두 근로자 그룹을 위한 시설이지만 각 그룹 이 이용하는 영역의 분리와 결합을 정교하게 조직하여 이용자의 혼란 없이 하 나의 이미지를 연출한다. 바닷가의 특성을 살린 떠 있는 수평의 매스는 웅장하 면서도 안정적인 자세로 자동차 산업의 미래를 제시하면서 구조적인 호기심을 자극하며 자연 속의 monolith가 된다. 유리와 석재의 두 재료를 상반되는 질 감과 색상으로 강하게 대비가 되도록 계획하였고, 매스로 위요되는 중앙의 마 당은 경계 밖의 자연을 끌어들이면서도 정적으로 차별되는 독립적인 공간감을 갖는다. 매스와 필로티가 만들어내는 수 개소의 중정은 열림과 닫힘을 반복하 며 이를 마주하는 서로 다른 방향에서의 다채로운 경험을 할 수 있도록 만들어 준다. 200미터에 달하는 일직선의 길이는 분명 사람의 스케일을 벗어나는 길 이임에도 불구하고 사이사이의 틈으로 외부의 자연이 들어오고 필요한 곳에 자연채광이 가능하도록 하여 위압감과 지루함 없이 시설을 이용할 수 있다는 점에서 건축사의 역량을 확인할 수 있다. 특히 내부의 특정 벽이나 독립적인 계단 등에서 보이는 조형성은 이곳이 일상의 공간이 아닌 특별한 장소라는 점 을 인식하도록 해주며 업무와 여가 그리고 문화의 경계에 놓이도록 한다. 이러 한 점을 종합적으로 고려하여 건축사의 노력이 인정되어 수상자로 선정한다.

외관과 지형관계

The Hyundai Motor Group Yeongnam Training Facility consists of two independent training centers: the Gyeongju Campus for union employees of the Ulsan plant, and the Global Partnership Cooperation Center for executives of partner companies. The two buildings, shaped respectively like the Korean letters “ㄱ” and “ㄴ,” each carry their own directional orientation, yet they are arranged together in a “ㅁ”-shaped configuration. This composition symbolizes a shared purpose—bringing the two entities together in a centripetal, unified gesture while maintaining their independence and autonomy. Together, they form a cohesive and harmonious training complex.

The site lies on a coastal hill in Haseo-ri, Yangnam-myeon, Gyeongju. It opens to expansive views of the sea and shoreline to the east and south, while low forested hills embrace the site from the north and west. The northern ridgeline forms the backdrop to the entrance plaza, marking the beginning of each participant’s training journey. To the south—toward the direction of the Ulsan plant—the dining hall is positioned to function as the concluding space of the training experience, encouraging informal conversation and interaction beyond the formal program.

To express Hyundai’s pioneering spirit—rooted in its origins in construction—the residential wings incorporate bold structural elements, including a column-free span exceeding 50 meters and a cantilever extending 15 meters. These engineering challenges were not pursued as technical feats alone; combined with the dramatic landscape of Gyeongju’s mountains and sea, they establish a strong sense of place and identity for the facility.

Commentary

Located on a coastal hillside overlooking the company’s industrial complex, this facility provides training and retreat functions for employees. Although designed primarily for education, the complex adopts a resort-like character. The program accommodates two distinct user groups; through precise spatial organization, their areas are separated and combined as needed without creating confusion, while maintaining a unified architectural identity.

A long horizontal volume, elevated above the terrain, takes advantage of the coastal setting. Its scale and structural clarity present a stable yet striking form that evokes the future orientation of the automotive industry while introducing a monolithic presence within the natural landscape. Glass and stone are employed in contrasting textures and colors to reinforce a clear material hierarchy. The central courtyard, enclosed by the massing, admits surrounding natural views while retaining a calm, distinct atmosphere.

Multiple courtyards created by the interplay of mass and piloti generate alternating conditions of openness and enclosure, offering varied spatial experiences depending on approach and direction. Although the building extends roughly 200 meters—beyond a typical human scale—the insertion of external views and controlled daylight at intervals mitigates monotony and visual heaviness, demonstrating the architect’s skill in managing proportion and user comfort.

Inside, the sculptural treatment of selected walls, independent stair elements, and other interior features reinforces the sense that this is a special-purpose environment rather than a routine workspace, situating the experience between work, leisure, and cultural activity. Based on these considerations and the project’s overall execution, the facility is recognized as an Excellence Award recipient.
