대학의 커뮤니티 센터로서의 제2도서관
인천대학교 송도캠퍼스는 새 캠퍼스로 이전한 지 10여 년이 지난 지금, 학생들이 자연스럽게 모이고 머물며 교류할 수 있는 중심 공간의 필요성이 커지고 있다. 이에 기존 도서관에 잇대어 증축 계획된 제2도서관은 단순한 학습 시설의 확장을 넘어 대학의 커뮤니티 허브로서 새로운 역할을 지향한다. 도서관은 더 이상 지식을 축적하는 폐쇄적 공간이 아니라, 사람과 생각이 만나고 교류하는 열린 학문적 광장으로 재구성되었다. 이룸관은 이러한 공간적 전환을 통해 ‘대학’ 구성원의 일상과 사유를 품으며, 인천대학교의 새로운 중심공간으로 자리하길 기대한다.

교류와 소통이 핵심 가치인 창업·생산·유희의 도서관
이룸관은 초연결시대의 변화를 반영한 새로운 개념의 도서관으로, 창업·연구·학습·놀이가 공존하는 복합적 지식 플랫폼이다. 기존 계단 광장과 맞닿은 ICT 라운지를 중심으로 상부 증축부가 열리며, 창업·미디어·컨버전스 등 다양한 활동이 유기적으로 이어진다. 오픈홀과 아트리움을 통한 시선과 동선의 교차 속에서 이용자들은 자유롭게 머물며 생각과 경험을 공유하고, 교류와 소통을 체험하는 열린 학습의 장을 이룬다. 이룸관은 지식의 축적을 넘어 사유와 상상, 협력과 실험이 공존하는 대학의 창의적 플랫폼이자, 학문과 활동, 놀이와 발견이 겹쳐지는 시대의 변화를 품은 새로운 대학의 중심으로 자리한다.

기존 도서관 ‘필로티 하부’와 ‘계단 광장’을 활용한 입체적 공간 구성
증축 도서관은 기존 도서관의 필로티 하부와 계단 광장을 적극적으로 활용하여, 수평과 수직의 흐름이 교차하는 입체적 공간 구조를 형성하였다. 기존 도서관과 연결되는 중앙 컨버전스 홀에는 계단형 스탠드를 배치하여, 전시·강연·공연 등 다양한 행사가 자연스럽게 이루어질 수 있도록 계획하였다. 층과 층이 시각적·공간적으로 연속되는 구조로 개별공간이 이동과 시선, 생각과 경험이 교차하는 다층적 장으로 확장된다. 그 결과, 도서관은 단순한 학습의 장소를 넘어 사유와 만남, 창의적 교류가 살아 숨 쉬는 대학의 열린 광장으로 자리하게 된다.

백색소음이 허용되는 개방적이고 동적인 도서관
제2도서관(이룸관)은 정숙을 강요하던 전통적 열람실의 틀을 벗어나, 칸막이를 없앤 열림 공간으로 재구성되었다. 이곳에서는 화이트 노이즈가 자연스러운 배경으로 흐르며, 학생들이 자유롭게 머물고, 탐색하며, 생각과 대화를 나눌 수 있다. 각 층과 라운지는 시각적으로 연결되어 있어 이동과 학습, 사유와 소통이 유기적으로 얽히는 다층적 공간을 형성한다. 도서관은 더 이상 조용히 공부하는 장소가 아니라 사유와 교류, 그리고 창의적 에너지가 살아 숨 쉬는 대학의 동적 지적 플랫폼으로 존재한다.

심사평
송도캠퍼스 이전 후 십 년 만인 2019년에 인천대학교는 도서관 공간 부족으로 제2도서관을 별동으로 신축하고자 설계공모를 실시하였는데, 설계자는 기존 도서관에 새로운 공간을 덧붙이는 방식을 제안하였다. 인천대학교 제2도서관은 대학과 도시, 옛것과 새것, 정숙한 연구와 열린 소통, 머무름과 이동 사이에서 균형을 찾고자 노력한 결과물이다. 증축 공간은 대학의 중심 공간인 중앙광장의 반대편에 조성되어 도시를 향해 열려 있으며 시민들도 이용할 수 있다. 기존 도서관의 필로티와 입면은 내부화되어 컨버전스홀에서 증축 공간과 연결된다. 전반적으로 개방적이고 연결된 공간을 지향하면서도 조용하게 연구에 집중할 수 있는 공간을 곳곳에 배치하였다. ICT 라운지, 오픈 라운지, 포커스 라운지는 개별 실로 구획된 메이커스페이스, 스타트업존, 캐럴을 유기적으로 연결한다. 인천대학교 제2도서관은 대학의 연구 시설인 동시에 교수·학생·시민이 공유하고 소통하는 내부 공공공간이다. 별동으로 계획하도록 추진한 설계공모에서 지침과 달리 수평 증축을 제안한 안이 당선되었다는 점에서, 공공건축 기획과 설계공모 제도 운영에 있어서 새로운 질문을 던지는 사례이기도 하다.

Library II as the New Community Center of the University
More than a decade after Incheon National University relocated to the Songdo Campus, the need for a central place where students can naturally gather, stay, and interact has grown steadily. The Second Library—planned as an extension directly connected to the existing library—was conceived not merely as an expansion of study space but as a new communal hub for the university. The library is reinterpreted as an open academic plaza where people and ideas meet, moving away from the notion of a closed archive. Through this spatial transformation, The Irum-gwan aims to embrace the everyday life and intellectual activities of its community, becoming a new center of campus life.

A Library of Creation, Collaboration, and Play
Reflecting the dynamics of a hyper-connected era, The Irumgwan presents a new concept of a library where entrepreneurship, production, learning, and play coexist. The upper extension opens above the ICT Lounge—situated beside the existing stepped plaza—and forms a sequence of interconnected spaces supporting entrepreneurship, media creation, and convergence-based activities. Within the open hall and atrium, visual connections and overlapping movements allow users to linger, exchange ideas, and naturally share experiences. The Irum-gwan becomes more than a repository of knowledge; it is a creative platform where thinking, imagination, collaboration, and experimentation are woven together—positioning itself as a new academic center shaped by the evolving culture of today’s universities.

A Three-Dimensional Structure Utilizing the Existing Piloti and Stepped Plaza
The extension makes strategic use of the existing library’s piloti space and the stepped plaza to create a layered spatial structure where horizontal and vertical flows intersect. A central convergence hall connects directly to the original library, with stepped seating that accommodates exhibitions, lectures, performances, and other campus events. Floors are visually and spatially connected, transforming individual rooms into multi-layered environments where movement, sightlines, thought, and experience intersect. As a result, the library becomes an open plaza within the university—an active setting for reflection, meeting, and creative exchange.

An Open and Dynamic Library Where White Noise Is Welcome
The Second Library (Irum-gwan) breaks away from the conventional silent reading room. Instead, it is reconfigured as an open, unpartitioned space where ambient white noise becomes a natural backdrop. Students are free to linger, explore, talk, and think. The visually connected floors and lounges form a multi-dimensional landscape where movement, study, contemplation, and conversation are interwoven. Here, the library is no longer a place of enforced quiet but a dynamic intellectual platform—alive with interaction, curiosity, and creative energy.

Commentary
In 2019, ten years after relocating to the Songdo Campus, Incheon National University initiated a design competition to address the shortage of library space, assuming that a separate, standalone building would be required. The winning proposal diverged from this guideline and instead suggested a horizontal extension directly connected to the existing library. The result is a project that seeks to balance campus and city, old and new structures, quiet study and open communication, and areas for movement and areas for staying. The extension is placed opposite the university’s main central plaza, opening the facility toward the city and allowing public access. The former piloti and façade of the existing library are enclosed and incorporated into the new convergence hall, which serves as the primary interface between the old and new spaces. While the overall spatial strategy emphasizes openness and connectivity, areas dedicated to focused research are distributed throughout. The ICT lounge, open lounge, and focus lounge are linked with makerspaces, startup zones, and individual carrels, forming an integrated sequence of study and collaborative environments. Library II thus functions both as an academic facility and as an internal public space shared by faculty, students, and citizens. The fact that a horizontally connected extension was selected in a competition based on guidelines for a detached building raises important questions for future public-building planning and design competition practices.
