‘광양가본’은 “광양에 가본 사람은 그 맛을 안다”라는 의미로 지역 브랜드의 자부심을 담아 이름 붙여진 광양전통불고기 전문점이다. 서천변을 따라 형성된 전통불고기 특화거리 안에서 마땅한 부지를 찾지 못하고 다소 떨어진 한적한 주거지에서 프로젝트는 시작되었다. 첫눈에 본 부지는 대로변의 높은 가로수 대열로 인해 쉽게 드러나 보이지 않는 자리였다. 그러나 부지 안에 들어서니 서산을 따라 서천변의 풍경과 어우러지는 가로수 녹음이 이곳만의 매력으로 다가왔다. 특히 2층 골조가 올라갈 무렵, 현장에 매화꽃이 흩날리던 장면은 매년 광양매화축제와 함께 이곳이 특별한 공간으로 자리할 것이라는 기대감을 주었다.
‘광양가본’은 1, 2층 200석 규모의 음식점과 3층의 주택으로 구성된다. 아주 얇게 저민 고기를 화로에 구워 먹는 음식의 특성과 좁은 지역인 관계로 프라이버시를 고려해야 한다는 건축주의 의견을 적극 반영하여 음식을 온전히 경험할 수 있는 공간을 만드는 데 주력하였다. 또한 고깃집이 들어선다는 것은 이웃들에게는 반갑지만은 않은 일이다. 이에 냄새, 주차 혼잡, 영업 소음 등에 대한 민원을 고려하여 항상 단정한 외관을 유지하도록 하였고, 덕트, 실외기, 식자재 반입 등의 영역을 한정하여 외부에서 노출이 되지 않도록 외벽의 디자인을 하였다. 1층은 도로에서 깊숙이 후퇴시킴으로써 여유 있는 전면공간을 확보하여 접근과 주차의 혼잡을 줄이고 쾌적함과 편의를 더하였다. 전면창은 통창 대신 높이를 올려 설치하여 외부 시선으로 인한 피로를 줄이고 음식의 맛과 분위기를 오롯이 느낄 수 있도록 하였다.
음식점의 각 층은 중정을 중심으로 오픈홀, 내실, 주방 크게 세 영역으로 구성된다. 주방은 중앙에 두어 업무 동선을 단축시키고, 고객은 중정을 순환하며 다양한 공간감을 경험할 수 있게 하였다. 이러한 중정형 배치는 고객은 물론 인접 건물과의 프라이버시를 보호하고 상호 간 민원 발생 요소를 줄이는 역할을 한다.
쭉쭉 뻗은 가로수 사이로 드러나는 붉은색 외피, 깊이감 있는 매스와 이질적인 텍스처는 빛에 의해 시시때때로 다양한 분위기를 만든다. 수평라인이 강조된 디테일은 안정적이면서도, 곡선으로 흐르며 하부층과 이어지는 느낌은 이색적이다. 유리를 끼우고 난 후 보니 커튼월에 비친 가로수가 의외의 즐거운 장면을 만들어낸다.
특화거리를 벗어난 입지를 우려했지만 오픈 후 들러본 ‘광양가본’은 많은 사람들의 발길로 가득했다. 맛과 공간, 브랜드의 조화를 목표로 기획부터 완공까지 건축주 가족분들과 함께 한 긴 여정은 잊지 못할 것이다. 이제 설계자의 손을 떠난 이 공간이 단순히 한 끼를 제공하는 공간을 넘어 지역의 맛과 문화를 담아내며 오래도록 사랑받는 로컬 브랜드로 스며들기를 마음 깊이 응원한다.

Gwangyang Gabon takes its name from the phrase, “Those who have been to Gwangyang know the taste,” carrying the pride of a local brand as a traditional Gwangyang bulgogi restaurant. The project began on a quiet residential site, slightly removed from the well-known bulgogi street along the Seocheon River, as no suitable plot could be found within the main district. At first glance, the site was hard to notice due to a dense row of tall street trees along the main road. But once inside, the greenery blending with the river landscape and the low mountain beyond revealed a quiet charm unique to this place. When the second-floor frame was rising, plum blossoms were falling across the site—a moment that hinted this place would become special each spring, along with the Gwangyang Plum Blossom Festival.
The building houses a 200-seat restaurant on the first and second floors, with a residence on the third floor. Reflecting the nature of bulgogi—thinly sliced meat grilled over charcoal—and the close-knit surroundings, the design focuses on creating a space where food can be enjoyed without disturbance, while carefully protecting privacy. Since a restaurant can be a burden to neighbors, issues such as smell, parking, and noise were addressed from the start. The exterior was designed to stay neat at all times, with ducts, outdoor units, and delivery zones carefully controlled and hidden from view.
The first floor is set back from the road to create a generous front space, easing access and parking while improving comfort. Instead of large open glass walls, windows are placed higher to reduce visual fatigue from outside and allow diners to focus on taste and atmosphere.
Each restaurant floor is organized around a central courtyard, with three main zones: an open hall, private dining rooms, and the kitchen. Placing the kitchen at the center shortens work paths, while guests move around the courtyard and experience different spatial moods. This courtyard layout also helps protect privacy for both customers and neighboring buildings, reducing potential conflicts.
Between the straight lines of street trees, the red exterior skin, deep massing, and contrasting textures create changing scenes throughout the day as light shifts. Strong horizontal details give a stable feeling, while gentle curves connect down to the lower levels, adding a subtle twist. Once the glass was installed, reflections of the trees on the façade created an unexpected and pleasant moment.
Despite early concerns about its location outside the main restaurant street, Gwangyang Gabon was full of visitors when
revisited after opening. The long journey—from planning to completion shared closely with the owner’s family, will remain
memorable. Now, as the space begins its life beyond the architect’s hands, I sincerely hope it grows into a loved local brand, carrying the taste and culture of Gwangyang far beyond a single meal.
