비움으로 새긴 풍경, 인탈리오
인탈리오(intaglio)는 여러 개의 독립된 매스가 리듬감 있게 놓여 하나의 풍경을 만든다. 각각의 유닛은 독채 펜션(스테이)으로 계획되었고, In동 한켠에는 건축주가 머무는 카페(TA cafe)와 지하 음악실(T ground)이 고요히 깃들었다.

비워낸 공간이 오히려 중심을 이룬다. 그 공백이 전체의 긴장과 호흡을 잡아준다.

매스 간의 간격은 단순한 분절이 아니라, 빛과 바람이 흐르는 틈이자 자연이 스며드는 경계다. 그 사이의 느슨한 긴장의 공간은 마치 변산의 바람이 지나가는 길처럼 건축의 숨통을 트이게 하며 방문객과 조우한다.

건물의 입면은 수직적인 제스처를 통해 하늘을 향해 열린 형상을 취한다. 흰색으로 마감된 면과 세로 루버는 강한 햇빛을 부드럽게 걸러냈는데, 건축적 견고함과 인간의 섬세한 감성의 경계를 표현하고자 했다. 루버는 햇빛을 가볍게 받으며, 건물의 표면 위로 바람처럼 그림자를 흘려보낸다. 루버 사이로 비치는 빛은 시간에 따라 건물의 표정을 바꾸고, 그 그림자는 마치 파도처럼 건물 위를 미끄러진다. 시간은 그 표면 위에 머물다 흘러간다. 그 틈새를 지나며 하루의 결이 바뀌고, 오후의 온도가 천천히 벽 위에 스민다. 사람은 그 그림자의 변화를 따라 걷다가, 어느새 고요히 멈춰 선다.

두 동의 하부는 노출 콘크리트로 마감되어 땅의 무게를 드러내고, 상부의 백색 스터코는 하늘의 가벼움을 반사한다. 무겁고 가벼움, 거침과 매끄러움이 대비되는 이 물성은 비움이 만들어낸 긴장을 더욱 선명하게 드러낸다. 기울어진 삼각형의 두 동은 땅에 단단히 닿아 있으면서도, 큰 비움에 의해 가볍게 들어 올려진 듯한 인상을 남긴다. 비워낸 공간은 형태를 지탱하는 보이지 않는 힘이 되어, 건축을 물리적 구조를 넘어 시지각적 균형의 상태로 끌어올린다.

울창한 숲을 따라 이어지는 높은 콘크리트 옹벽은 각 스페이스를 구획하는 동일한 높이의 옹벽들과 함께 하나의 골목을 만든다. 이 골목을 따라 걷다 마주하는 프라이빗 정원, 그리고 그 너머로 이어지는 G·L·i·O 스페이스 유닛들은 방문객을 각 객실로 천천히 이끈다. 외부에서 내부로, 다시 자신 안쪽으로 깊어지는 이 레이어의 과정 속에서 방문자는 공간을 통과하며 저마다의 ‘인탈리오’를 새기게 된다. 그렇게 인탈리오는 건축의 이름이자, 이곳에 머무는 경험 자체를 설명하는 하나의 방식이 된다.

A Landscape Carved by Emptiness, Intaglio
Intaglio is formed by several independent masses placed in a calm rhythm, together shaping a single landscape. Each unit is planned as a private stay, while one corner quietly holds the owner’s café and an underground music room.
Here, what is removed becomes the center. The empty space sets the tension and the breathing of the whole. The gaps between masses are not simple separations; they are passages for light and wind, soft boundaries where nature seeps in. This loose, charged space opens the building’s breath, like the wind paths of Byeonsan, and meets the visitor along the way.

 

The façades rise with vertical gestures, opening toward the sky. White surfaces and vertical louvers soften the strong sunlight, marking the line between architectural firmness and human sensitivity. The louvers catch light lightly, letting shadows drift across the surface like wind. As time passes, light between the louvers changes the building’s expression; shadows slide over it like waves. Time rests on the surface, then moves on. The day’s texture shifts, afternoon warmth slowly sinking into the walls. Following these shadows, one walks—and then quietly stops.

 

The lower parts of the two buildings are finished in exposed concrete, showing the weight of the ground. Above, white stucco reflects the lightness of the sky. This contrast—heavy and light, rough and smooth—sharpens the tension created by emptiness. The two tilted triangular volumes feel firmly grounded, yet appear gently lifted by the large void between them. The emptied space becomes an invisible force that holds the form, raising the architecture from physical structure to a state of visual balance.

 

Along the dense forest, tall concrete retaining walls—set at a shared height—shape a narrow alley. Walking this path, visitors encounter private gardens, then the G•L•i•O space units that lead slowly to each room. Moving from outside to inside, and deeper inward again, visitors pass through layers of space and carve their own Intaglio. In this way, Intaglio is both the name of the architecture and a way to describe the experience of staying here.
