대지와 주변 환경
대지는 산을 깎아 마을을 이루고 있는 중심부에 위치한다. 윗 도로에서 아래 평지까지 레벨차가 무려 8.5미터에 달했다. 사람들이 많이 오가는 윗 도로에서 보여 지는 풍경은 오로지 산과 하늘만의 자연이었다. 나도 모르게 하나님을 향해 하늘 속으로 걸어간다. 자연이 이끈 건축! 이 교회는 내부 예배당보다 도로에서 바로 접근하는 옥상에서의 모습이 별무리 교회를 대표하는 장면이 될 것이다.

 

건물 형태와 배치
따뜻한 포용의 교회, 비상하는 활기찬 기운
마치 세상을 굽어 살피며 두 팔로 안아주는 듯한 매스는 포용의 교회를 건축물로 형상화했다. 안아주는, 하늘을 향해 두 팔을 벌린, 환영하는 듯한 느낌의 수식어로도 설명할 수 있겠다. 기존의 다른 수직성을 강조한 많은 교회와는 다르게 수평성이 인상적인 건물이다. 이 수평성은 대지가 지닌 2개 층에 가까운 8.5미터 레벨차가 이루어낸 결과이다. 윗 도로는 보행자의 이동이 많아 주된 접근로가 되었다. 도로에서는 오로지 자연을 배경으로 야외 십자가만 오브제처럼 인지되도록 했고 시선을 차단하는 건물은 배제하였다. 도로에서 브리지를 지나 시선의 끝에 존재한 십자가 하나만으로 경건함을 느끼기에 부족함이 없다. 필자는 이곳을 하늘예배당이라 부르기로 했다. 매스의 중심부는 주출입구, 카페 등 공용공간으로, 양쪽 날개와도 같은 매스는 대예배당과 교회기념관으로 구성했다. 경사지를 활용하여 다양한 레벨에서도 출입구로 접근할 수 있도록 동선을 자연스럽게 연결했고 외부에도 버려지는 공간이 없도록 장애인과 노약자를 배려한 접근로, 휴게 공간, 취미 공간 등 최대한 효율적인 사용을 고려했다. 마치 날아오르는 듯 자유롭고 활기찬 이미지도 부여했는데 교회뿐만 아니라 학생들이 많이 사용하는 만큼 세상을 향해 비상하는 희망의 날개 짓이 되기를 바랐기 때문이다. 별무리 마을의 구심적 역할로서 상징성과 효용성을 담아내려 했다.

평면 계획과 실별 특징
두 팔 벌린 형태_적절한 기능 분리와 연계
윗 도로에서 외부계단을 따라 내려가면 2층 주출입구를 만난다. 출입구 전면에는 비 안 맞는 외부공간을 계획하여 마치 작은 무대처럼 소모임, 연주활동 등 취미공간으로 활용할 수 있게 계획했고 계단은 야외 관람석으로 이용이 가능하다. 중심의 출입구에 면한 2층에는 라운드 형태의 카페를 계획하여 전면의 전망을 즐기며 사람들의 소통과 쉼, 교류공간으로 계획하였다. 또 남측엔 대예배당을, 북측엔 도서관 같은 교회기념관을 계획하여 두 가지 용도를 적절히 분리하였다. 1층은 소모임, 사무 공간 등으로 구성하였고 양측 매스는 안아주는 듯한 느낌이 들도록 중심을 향해 17도 가량 회전시켰다.

입면 디자인 계획
포용과 비상의 손짓
별무리 마을의 구심점이자 교회의 상징성은 입면에서도 고스란히 드러난다. 동서측의 입면은 온화하지만 강렬하고 굳건히 구축된 모습으로 사람들을 포용하듯 손짓한다. 마치 안아주는 듯한 모습과 막 날기를 시도하는 비상의 기운은 하늘을 향한 완만한 곡선으로 방점을 찍는다. 입면은 수직의 좁고 긴 세로 형태의 창과 솔리드 벽면을 반복적인 패턴으로 구성하여 단순하지만 상징성이 묻어나도록 계획하였다. 빛에 관한 고민이 많았던 동서측 창유리는 블라인드 없이도 빛을 조절해 주는 인쇄 무늬유리(세라믹 도료를 실크 인쇄)인 프릿 글라스를 적용해서 해결하였다. 주된 외장재는 경건하되 밝은 느낌의 백색 세라믹을 적용했다. 마치 굳건한 기단과도 같은 1층은 2층의 날개를 받쳐주는 것처럼 회색의 타일을 적용하여 대비를 이루며 비상의 느낌을 배가 시키도록 했다.

Site and Surroundings
The site sits at the heart of a village carved into a hillside, with a dramatic level difference of 8.5 meters between the upper road and the lower flat ground. From the busy upper road, the view is pure nature—only the mountain and the sky. Before I realize it, my steps feel as if they are walking into the sky, toward God. Architecture led by nature. For this church, the most defining scene will not be the sanctuary inside, but the rooftop—directly accessed from the road—where the presence of Byulmurri Church is most clearly felt.

Building Form and Placement
A warm, embracing church—full of lift and energy
The massing, as if looking over the world and wrapping it in open arms, gives architectural form to the idea of an embracing church. “Holding,” “opening its arms to the sky,” “welcoming”—all of these describe its gesture. Unlike many churches that emphasize verticality, this building leaves a strong impression through its horizontality—an outcome shaped by the site’s near two-story, 8.5-meter level change.
Because pedestrian flow is highest along the upper road, it becomes the main approach. From that road, we kept the background purely natural and allowed only an outdoor cross to be read as an object—removing any building volume that might block the view. Crossing the bridge, the single cross at the end of the sightline is enough to evoke reverence. I chose to call this place the “Sky Sanctuary.”
The center of the mass contains shared spaces such as the main entrance and café, while the two wing-like volumes house the main sanctuary and the church memorial hall. By using the slope, circulation connects naturally so that entrances can be reached from multiple levels. We also ensured that no exterior space is wasted—planning accessible routes for the disabled and elderly, as well as rest and hobby areas, for the most efficient use possible. The overall image is free and lively, like a building about to take flight. Since many students also use the church, I hoped it could become a hopeful wingbeat—lifting toward the world. As a symbolic and practical center for Byulmurri Village, the project aims to hold both meaning and usefulness.

Plan and Program Characteristics
Open-arm form: clear separation, yet strong connection
Descending from the upper road along an outdoor stair, you arrive at the second-floor main entrance. In front of the entrance, a covered outdoor area is designed—like a small stage—so it can be used for small gatherings, performances, and hobby activities.
The stair itself can also work as outdoor seating.
On the second floor facing the central entrance, a rounded café is planned as a place for communication, rest, and exchange—enjoying the open view ahead. The main sanctuary is placed to the south, while a library-like church memorial hall is set to the north, clearly separating the two functions. The first floor contains small group rooms and office spaces. To reinforce the embracing gesture, the two side masses rotate inward by about 17 degrees toward the center.

Elevation Design
A gesture of embrace and ascent
As the village’s focal point and a symbolic church, the building’s identity is fully expressed in the elevations. The east and west façades feel gentle yet powerful—solidly built, and gesturing as if to welcome people into an embrace. The sense of holding, along with the energy of first attempting flight, is emphasized by a soft curve rising toward the sky.
The façade composition is simple yet symbolic: a repeated pattern of narrow vertical windows and solid wall surfaces. Because controlling light on the east and west was a key concern, the glazing uses frit glass—ceramic ink silk-screened patterns—so light can be moderated without blinds. The main exterior material is white ceramic, solemn yet bright in tone. The first floor, like a firm plinth, is finished with gray tile to contrast with and visually support the “wings” above—strengthening the feeling of ascent.
