견고한 침묵
경산 사동의 주택가, 이 집은 묵직한 존재감으로 서 있다. 짙은 차콜빛의 목재 질감 위에 밝은 회색의 면이 얹혀 있는 형상은, 마치 대지 위에 단단한 바위가 뿌리내리고 그 위로 가벼운 구름이 머무는 듯한 풍경을 자아낸다. 도로를 향해 무심한 듯 등을 돌리고 서 있는 이 견고한 등은, 복잡한 주변 환경으로부터 은퇴한 건축주의 느린 시간을 지키겠다는 약속과도 같다.
도로변 파라펫 라인 뒤로 완만한 경사의 박공지붕을 숨겨두어, 모던한 ‘플랫 루프(Flat Roof)’의 조형미를 유지하면서도 우수 처리와 단열이라는 기능적인 요구를 해결했다. 지붕의 선마저 파라펫 뒤로 겸손하게 숨기며, 집은 오로지 자신의 내면에 집중한다.

안으로 열린 세상, 빛을 품은 포옹
현관을 지나 내부로 들어서는 순간, 집은 감춰두었던 따뜻한 속내를 드러낸다. 밖에서는 철저히 닫혀 있던 시선이 안마당을 향해서는 투명하게 열린다. ‘ㄱ’자(L-shape)로 대지를 포근하게 감싸 안은 배치는 오롯이 건축주만을 위한 하늘과 마당을 담아낸다. 시간과 계절의 흐름에 따라 매일 다른 표정을 짓는 마당은 담장 너머와는 다른 세상, 즉 건축주만의 소우주(小宇宙)가 된다.

거실과 주방, 식당이 마당을 중심으로 연결되는 1층은 가족의 일상이 막힘없이 흐르는 공간이다. 요리하는 소리, 마당에서 화초를 가꾸는 모습, 거실에서의 휴식이 테라스라는 전이 공간을 통해 안팎으로 자연스럽게 교차한다. 이곳에서 창(窓)은 단순한 유리가 아니라, 안락한 실내와 푸른 마당을 하나로 묶어주는 투명한 다리가 된다.

휴식과 기다림의 공간
언제든 자녀들이 찾아와 편히 머물다 갈 수 있도록 넉넉하게 마련된 2층은, 가족의 온기를 기다리는 설렘의 공간이자 다시 찾아올 고요를 준비하는 여유의 공간이다.

부부 침실은 가장 깊은 곳에 자리하여 편안한 안식을 돕는다. 2층의 백미는 볕이 잘 드는 ‘가족실’과, 1층 거실의 높은 층고를 활용해 조성된 ‘툇마루 형식의 방’이다. 마을 건너편 녹지를 정확히 응시하는 이 툇마루 방은 1층 마당과는 또 다른 사색적인 풍경을 선사한다. 또한, 외부로 돌출된 가족실 매스는 자칫 정적일 수 있는 외관에 리듬감을 부여하며 흥미로운 조형적 오브제로서의 역할을 수행한다.

든든한 벗으로의 집
사동 주택은 단순한 거주를 넘어선다. 밖으로는 풍경을 정돈하고, 안으로는 건축주의 시간을 따뜻하게 보듬는다. 어둠이 내리고 마당의 조명이 하나둘 켜지면, 집은 낮과는 또 다른 아늑함으로 부부를 감싼다. 화려한 장식보다는 편리한 동선을, 과시하기보다는 내실 있는 단열과 채광을 추구한 집. 이곳은 단순히 콘크리트로 지은 건물이 아니라, 지나온 삶을 위로하고 앞으로 다가올 날들을 따뜻하게 동행해 줄 가장 든든하고 다정한 벗이다.

A Solid Silence
Having a weighty presence, this house is located in a residential area of Sa-dong, Gyeongsan-si. The light gray surface overlaid on the texture of dark charcoal wood creates a landscape reminiscent of a solid rock rooted on the land, surmounted by a light cloud. This sturdy back, seemingly indifferently turned toward the road, seems to symbolize the promise of the client, who retires from his complex surroundings, to preserve the slow pace of life.
The gently sloping gable roof is hidden behind the roadside parapet, preserving the aesthetic beauty of a modern “flat roof” while addressing the functional demands of rainwater management and insulation. Even the roofline itself is modestly concealed behind the parapet, allowing the house to focus solely on its inner self.

A World Open to the Inside, Embrace of Light
The moment you enter the house through the front door, the house reveals its warm, hidden inner self. The view, once completely closed from the outside, opens transparently to the courtyard. The ‘L-shaped’ layout, which gently embraces the land, captures a sky and a courtyard exclusively for the client. The courtyard, which changes with the passage of time and season, becomes a world distinct from the one beyond the fence—a microcosm unique to the client.
The first floor, where a living room, a kitchen, and a dining room are connected around the courtyard, is a space where the family’s daily life flows smoothly. The sounds of cooking, the sight of growing plants in the courtyard, and the relaxation of the living room naturally intersect with the inside and outside through the terrace, a transitional space. Here, the windows are not mere glass; they are transparent bridges that connect the comfortable indoor space with the lush courtyard.

A Space for Rest and Waiting
The second floor, generously designed for children to visit and relax at any time, is a space of excitement awaiting the warmth of family and a space of leisure to prepare for the tranquility that will return.
The master bedroom is located in the deepest part of the house, fostering a sense of peaceful rest. The highlight of the second floor is the sunny “family room” and the “toenmaru (porch)-style room,” created by utilizing the high ceiling of the living room on the first floor. This toenmaru room, which gazes directly at the greenery across the village, offers a different, contemplative view from the yard on the first floor. Furthermore, the family room’s mass, which protrudes to the outside, adds a sense of rhythm to the exterior that could otherwise be static, and serves as an interesting formative object.

A House as a Reliable Friend
The house in Sa-dong is more than just a residence. It organizes the landscape from the outside, and it warmly embraces the client’s time inside the house. As darkness falls and the yard lights come on one by one, the house embraces the couple with another level of coziness different from daytime. The house prioritizes convenient movement over extravagant decoration, and substantial insulation and lighting over ostentatious displays. This is not simply a concrete structure; it is a reliable and warm companion, comforting the past and warmly accompanying the days to come.
