Prologue
글빛도서관은 서울 성북 미디어문화마루 지상 1~2층 일부에 위치하고 있다. 웅장한 외관의 필로티 하부 로비로 들어서면 지상 4층까지 연결된 개방된 홀과 2층 규모의 계단식 객석이 눈에 들어온다. 그러한 공간적 개방감과 달리 화강석, 수성페인트, 천장텍스, 다운라이트 등의 무미건조한 재료는 이질적인 삭막함을 연출하고 있었다. 그 뒤로 폭 8.5미터, 길이 38.5미터의 기다란 2층의 공간이 도서관으로 배정되어 있었다. 600제곱미터의 작은 규모의 도서관은 중심에 지상1, 2층을 연결하는 철재사선계단으로 공간과 동선이 분절되어 있었고, 사방이 개방된 유리창을 통해 시선은 외부로 흐트러지고 있었다. 발주처와 도서관 관장도 이러한 공간의 한계와 문제를 인지하고, 기존의 14개의 구립 도서관보다도 차별화되고 새로운 개념의 도서관을 요구하였다.

설계의도Ⅰ_영역의 구획과 개방
일반적인 공공도서관은 성인열람실, 어린이열람실, 유아열람실, 도서자료실, 컴퓨터실, 교육실 등의 프로그램으로 공간을 분리하여 구획한다. 하지만 소규모 단위의 구립도서관은 공간이 가지는 한계와 다양한 프로그램의 수요, 시간에 따른 공간의 확장과 변화에 대처하기 어려운 경우가 많다. 이러한 공간의 한계를 극복하기 위한 방법으로, 공간을 영역의 단위로 구획하여 공간이 가지는 영역성과 개방성을 확보할 수 있다. 이는 변화하는 도서관 프로그램과 문화에 대처하여 운영자가 공간을 자유로이 변화할 수 있다. 그러기 위해 도서자료실과 같은 고정형 가구는 벽면서가로 대체하여 3만 권의 도서를 수납할 수 있다. 벽면서가는 높이와 위치에 따라 다양한 용도로 활용되며, 특히 높은 부분은 과년 도서를 비치하여 도서보관실의 역할을 겸한다. 벽면서가는 외부로 개방된 시선을 도서관 내부로 유도하고, 포켓공간과 서가후면 개방으로 외부 환경과 시각적 관계를 형성한다. 일부의 벽면서가는 도서관 홍보·전시 용도로 활용되며, 각종 행사와 추천 서적을 외부로 알릴 수 있다.

설계의도 Ⅱ_ 영역의 전개와 연결
성인실, 어린이실, 유아실 등의 연령별 분리는 층으로 가능하다. 사선계단에 의해 대각선으로 분절된 공간의 흐름을 영역의 전개, 바닥과 천장 패턴디자인으로 공간을 연결한다. 지상1층 계단식 하부의 낮은 공간은 부모의 보호가 필요한 유아영역으로 아늑한 타원형의 공간에서 주변에 영향을 받지 않도록 버퍼존(안내데스크, 어린이 홍보·전시영역)을 형성하고, 사선계단의 좌우측은 어린이 영역과 청소년 영역으로 전개한다. 계단하부를 활용한 포켓서가는 영역을 구분하고, 시각으로 다시 영역을 연결한다. 각각의 영역은 잉태를 모티브로 한 타원형 유아영역, 끼리끼리 문화를 담은 사선의 계단식의자와 패턴의 어린이 영역, 독립적인 자아를 담은 집 구조의 청소년 영역으로 정체성을 부여하여 사용자가 영역을 인지할 수 있다. 지상2층 성인열람 영역은 사선계단으로 분절되어 있어 출입구부터 안내데스크, 성인 홍보·전시영역, 미디어열람영역, 휴식영역의 동적공간과 성인 열람영역과 자료열람, 노트북데스크 등 정적공간으로 구분하고 바닥과 천장의 패턴 디자인으로 공간을 연결하였다. 

분위기_빛, 조경, 색
‘빛’은 볼 수 없고 만질 수 없으나 에너지와 파장을 통해 이용자가 느낄 수 있고, ‘조경’은 식물의 조화로 이용자가 안정을 느낄 수 있으며, ‘색’은 색상, 명도, 채도에 따라 이용자의 감정을 조절한다. ‘빛’, ‘조경’, ‘색’은 시각재료인 눈을 통해 느끼게 되는 재료이며, 공간의 표정을 만들어주는 재료로 공간의 분위기를 결정한다. 글빛도서관은 소규모 공간에 다양한 연령층과 프로그램이 있어 각 영역을 존중하고, 전체를 아우르며, 공간을 부각시키는 악센트 컬러(Accent Color)로 아쿠아 딥 블루(Aqua Deep Blue)를 선정하였다. 깊은 바다의 색을 담은 아쿠아 딥 블루는 시간의 변화에 따라 주간에는 딥 아쿠아(Deep Aqua)로, 야간에는 딥 블루(Deep Blue)로 변화한다. 아쿠아 딥 블루 색상의 차가움은 자연광과 인공광, 조경의 조화로 사용자에게 시각적 따스함과 편안한 공간의 분위기를 선사한다.

Prologue
Geulbit Public Library occupies the first and second floors of Seoul's Seongbuk Media Culture Maru. When you enter the lobby of the lower Piloti with a grand exterior, you can see an open hall connected to the 4th floor and tiered seats on the 2nd floor. Unlike spatial openness, dry and dull materials such as granite, water paint, ceiling tex, and downlight created heterogeneous desolateness. After that, a long space, 8.5 meters wide and 38.5 meters long was planned as a library on the second floor. In a small 600-square meter library,  space and movement flow were segmented by a steel diagonal stairway connecting the first and second floors above the ground at the center. The eyes were distracted to the outside through open glass windows on all sides. The client and the library director also recognized the limitations and problems of the space and demanded a new concept of a library differentiated from the existing 14 district libraries.

Design Purpose Ⅰ_ Zone Division and Openness
In general, public libraries tend to have divided space by programs such as an adults' reading room, a children's reading room, an infants' reading room, a reference library room, a computer room, and an education room. However, it is often difficult for a small-scale district library to cope with space limits, the demand for various programs, and the expansion and change of space over time. Overcoming space limitations, the area secures its territoriality and openness, which allows the manager to freely change the space in response to changing library programs and cultures. To this end, a wall-mounted shelf is used in such places as a reference library room to accommodate 30,000 books instead of fixed furniture. Depending on the height and location of a wall-mounted bookshelf, it is used for different purposes, and in particular, the higher part serves as a library storage room with old books. The bookshelf draws eyes, opened to the outside, into the inside of the library while creating a visual relationship with the external environment by extending the pocket space and the back of the bookshelf. Some of the wall-mounted bookshelves are used for library promotion and exhibition purposes to introduce a variety of events and recommended books to the outside world.

Design Purpose Ⅱ_Expansion and Connection of Zones
According to the user's age, each room, such as an adult's room, a children's room, and an infants' room, is on a different floor. The space, divided diagonally by the staircase, flows and connects areas through the expansion of the zone and the floor and ceiling pattern design. The low space under the stairs on the first floor above the ground is a children's zone that needs parental protection. A buffer zone (information desk, children's publicity/exhibition zone) is constructed in a cozy oval space to avoid being affected by the surroundings. The left and right sides of the diagonal staircase expand into a children's zone and a youth zone. Using the lower part of the staircase, the pocket bookshelf divides zones and connects them again visually. Users can recognize each zone through individual identities of the zones: the oval infants' area with a motif of a new life, a children's zone with a diagonal tiered seat and pattern that contains a collective culture, and a youth zone with a house feeling for having an independent self. The adults' reading zone on the 2nd floor is divided by a diagonal staircase, from the entrance to the information desk, into dynamic spaces such as an adult publicity/exhibition zone, a media reading zone, and a relaxation zone; and static spaces such as an adults' reading room, a reference library room, and a laptop desk. In addition, the areas are connected by the pattern design of the floor and the ceiling.

Atmosphere_Light, Landscape, Color
‘Light’ is invisible and intangible, but users can feel it through energy and wavelength. ‘Landscape’ allows users to feel stable with the harmony of plants, and ‘color’ regulates users’ emotions’ light,’ ‘landscape,’ and ‘color’ are materials that can be apparent through the eyes, that is, visual materials. Considering Geulbit Public Library has different age groups and programs in a small space, Aqua Deep Blue was selected as an accent color that respects each zone, encompasses the whole, and emphasizes the area. Aqua Deep Blue, the color of the deep sea, changes into Deep Aqua at any time but into Deep Blue at night according to the change of time. The coldness of Aqua Deep Blue harmonizes with natural light, artificial light, and landscaping to provide users with a visual warmth and a comfortable atmosphere.
