굿올데이즈 Good ol’days
좋았던 옛 시절 또는 예전의 좋았던 때를 회상하며 쓰는 말.
동부산 전성시대라고 해도 과언이 아닐 만큼, 관광객이 쏠림에도 불구하고 부산을 찾는 여행객에게 구도심의 부산다움으로 환대할 수 있는 공간을 만들어 보겠다며 그간의 고민을 빼곡히 담은 메모에서부터 이 프로젝트는 시작되었다.
부산의 구도심인 중앙동 뒷골목에 들어서면 합벽으로 지어져 틈새 없이 빼곡한 건물 사이로 오래된 맛집 포스를 풍기는 노포가 즐비하고, 이제는 인기를 다했음에도 눈치 없이 한껏 자란 플라타너스 가로수 사이로 흐릿하게 불어오는 짠 내 나는 바닷바람을 맡고 있노라면 굳이 설명하지 않아도 어느 영화의 한 장면에 들어와 있는 듯한 기분이 든다. 
대지의 요구에만 충실하거나 혹은 세련된 외관에만 의존하는 건물과는 달리 이 장소에 깊게 뿌리내려 구도심의 노쇠한 분위기를 흔들 수 있는 힘을 가진 건물이 되길 바라며 설계에 임했다.

여유롭고 느슨한 관계
건물의 외관은 검은색 전벽돌과 투명한 유리로 심플하게 구성했다. 건축선에 맞닿아 벽돌로 마감된 그리드 패턴의 보편적인 입면 디자인을 따르면서도 건물의 양 모서리에 창을 두어 외부와 내부 경계가 여유로워 보이게 했고, 옥상의 파라펫 벽을 밀어 넣어 건물과 하늘의 경계선이 선명하게 구분되지 않도록 했다.
인근 대부분의 건물이 벽이나 얇은 유리를 사이에 두고 인도에 바짝 붙어 있는 것과 달리, 1층 창을 벽돌 두 장 정도의 깊이만큼 밀어 넣고 원목을 얹어 걸터앉을 수 있는 작은 공간을 만들었다. 30센티미터 남짓한 이 공간에 앉아 쉬어가는 사람들로 인해 빽빽한 가로의 풍경이 한결 느슨해질 것으로 기대했다.

단순하지만 풍부한 공간 
건물의 구성은 간단하고 명확하다. 5층 규모로 1~2층은 카페 겸 리셉션 그리고 3~5층은 객실로 구성되어 있다. 가로수길에 면한 15미터 너비의 입면은 네 개의 기둥과 5개의 오프닝으로 구성하여 내부로 풍경을 끌어들이는데 집중했고, 특히 양 모서리창으로 보이는 입체적인 가로의 풍경은 익숙하지만 새로운 모습이다. 
기준층은 모서리 창을 가진 2베이의 객실 두 개와 1베이의 가운데 객실 하나로 구성했다. 남서향 코너로 들어오는 해 질 녘의 노르스름한 빛, 살짝 비껴서 있는 건너편 건물 옆으로 보이는 용두산공원의 부산타워전망은 특별할 것 없는 도심 뒷골목의 호텔을 특별하게 한다. 저층은 카페와 리셉션으로 공간을 구분하지 않았다.
카페를 찾은 이의 일상과 호텔을 찾은 여행자의 특별한 날이 뒤섞여 각자의 부산을 나눌 수 있다. 이런 장면을 기대할 수 있는 것은 건축주의 기획 의지와 설계자의 설계 의도가 고스란히 드러나는 것으로 차차 건물은 사라지고 사람으로 가득 채워지길 기대한다.

건축주의 신뢰 덕분에 건축과 인테리어 그리고 운영적인 부분까지 전 과정에 참여할 수 있었다. 프로젝트를 진행하면서 지속적으로 집중한 점은 방문자에게 부산다움을 어떻게 전달할 것인가였다. 사용자가 건물의 외관과 공간의 분위기뿐만 아니라 그 안을 채우는 작은 요소 하나하나에 대한 고민을 고스란히 즐기는 모습에서 용기를 얻어 부산다운 건축상에도 신청하게 되었다.
좋은 건축이 완성되기 위해선 관계자들의 뚜렷하고 지속적인 의지가 중요하다고 생각한다. ‘좋은’의 의미는 각자의 입장에 따라 다르겠지만, 그 의지를 지속할 수 있었던 힘은 서류에 명시되어 있는 관계를 넘어서 나누었던 수많은 대화에 있었다. 프로젝트의 기획 의도를 공감시키려는 건축주, 그 의도를 도면으로 담아내기 위한 설계자, 그리고 이를 그대로 구현해준 시공자의 노고에 감사를 전한다.

Good ol’days
A period or a time in the past that a person thinks was pleasant.
This project started with a memo about the worries we've had to create a space to welcome tourists to Busan by appealing to the charms of the old-downtown Busan despite a large number of tourists as it is not an exaggeration to say that it is the golden age of Eastern Busan.
When you enter the back alley in Jungang-dong, the old downtown of Busan, many stores are built with attached walls lining the backstreet, giving off an old yet famous restaurant vibe between the buildings. You feel natural as if you are in a scene from a particular movie if you have a sea breeze that blows faintly between sycamore trees that grow well, although they are no longer popular.
Unlike existing buildings that are faithful to the needs of the site or only rely on a sophisticated exterior, this building was designed in the hope that it would become a building that can transform the old downtown old atmosphere as it takes root deeply in this area.

Relaxed and loose relationship
The exterior of the building is composed of clay bricks and transparent glass. While following the universal elevation design of a grid pattern finished with bricks in contact with the building line, windows were placed at both corners of the building to make the boundary between the outside, and the inside look relaxed. So as not to be distinguished.
Unlike most of the nearby buildings, which are closely attached to the sidewalk with a wall or thin glass in between, the windows on the first floor are pushed into the depth of two bricks, and a small space for sitting is created by placing wood on them. We expected the dense streets to look relaxed with the people sitting and resting in this 30-centimeter-long space.

Simple but rich space
The layout of the building is simple and straightforward. The 5th floor consists of a cafe and reception on the 1st and 2nd floors and guest rooms on the 3rd and 5th floors. The 15-meter-wide facade facing Garosu-Gil comprises four pillars and five openings, focusing on bringing the landscape into the interior. In particular, the three-dimensional landscape of the street seen through the corner windows is familiar but new.
The base floor consisted of two rooms of 2-bay with corner windows and one room of 1-bay in the middle. The sunset is coming in from the southwest corner, and the view of the Busan Tower in Yongdusan Park from the side of the building, which is a little far off across the building, makes the hotel in the back alley of the downtown special. The lower floors were not divided into a cafe and a reception area.
The cafe visitors' daily life and the hotel guests' special day are mixed, allowing each person to share their memories of Busan. Such a scene can be expected to fully reveal the architect's planning intention and the designer's design intention. We hope the building will gradually disappear but be filled with people instead.

Thanks to the client's trust, we were able to participate in the entire process, from construction to interior and operation. During the project, we continued to focus on how to deliver Busan's charm to visitors. We were encouraged to apply for the Busan Architecture Awards by seeing the user who enjoyed not only the exterior of the building and the atmosphere of the space but also the worries about each small element that fills the interior.
We think that the clear and constant will of the people involved is important to complete a good building. The meaning of 'good' varies depending on the individual case, but the power to keep our will lies in many conversations that we have going beyond the mere relationship specified in the document. We want to express our gratitude to the client who tried to empathize with the planning intention of the project, the designer who tried to capture that intention in drawings, and the constructor who realized it.
