보이지 않는 나불천과 함께 호흡하는 사진의 집

잊힌 하천 옆에서 건축을 시작하다
대지는 진주의 구도심인 신안동의 한 모퉁이에 위치한다. 겉으로 보기에는 넓은 도로를 마주한 자투리 땅처럼 보인다. 동쪽 넓은 대로는 나불천(羅佛川)이 복개된 도로다. 지금은 도로 아래에 묻혀 있지만 한때는 마을을 따라 흐르던 생명의 물줄기였다. 우리는 이 건축을 통해 보이지 않는 하천과 다시 연결하고 싶었다. 복개를 철거할 수는 없지만 건축을 통해 그 흐름을 인식하고 기억하게 하는 방식을 찾으려 한다.

경계의 공간, 틈의 건축
건축물은 사진 전시와 교육을 위한 기능을 담고 있다. 각 층의 진입부를 실내로 바로 연결하지 않고 지붕 있는 외부 공간, 즉 ‘반외부 공간’(진입공간)을 통해서 들어가도록 구성했다. 진입공간은 내부와 외부, 개인과 도시, 사적인 것과 공적인 것 사이의 완충지대로 작동한다. 사람들은 이 틈에서 한 번 멈추고 고개를 들어 주변을 두리번거리며 복개된 도로 풍경과 멀리 진주성을 바라보게 된다. 짧은 순간이겠지만 그 순간이야말로 건축이 도시와 사람을 연결하게 되는 지점이라고 생각한다. 사람과 땅, 도시와 자연, 예술과 일상의 관계를 매개하는 장소가 될 수 있을 것이다.

건축의 밖과 안의 표정
건축물은 전시를 위한 공간으로서 너무 도드라지지 않기를 바란다. 외부 재료와 색채는 절제된 무채색 계열로 구성하였다. 마치 흑백사진처럼 차분하고 부드러운 이미지를 만들고자 했다. 사진이라는 매체의 특성과도 잘 어우러질 것이다. 건축이 조용한 배경이 되어줄 때 작품이 더 선명하게 드러날 수 있다. 내부마감 역시 맑고 단순한 느낌으로 계획했다. 장식 없이 빛과 재료 자체의 감각이 느껴지도록 설정하였다. 감상과 일상이 편안하게 스며드는 공간이 되었으면 했다.

도시와 만나는 전시관 건축
1층 출입구는 건축이 도시와 처음 만나는 공간이다. 도로에서 건물로의 접근은 자연스럽고 유연하게 계획하고 진입 계단과 엘리베이터는 시각적 중심에 배치해 동선의 방향성을 명확히 했다. 2층은 이 건축의 중심이 되는 사진 갤러리이다. 관람자가 전시실로 들어가는 동선을 살짝 길게 늘여 감상의 상태로 진입할 수 있는 공간적 장치를 마련하고자 했다. 이동하면서 감각을 전환하고 감정변화의 속도를 늦추는 준비의 시간이다. 그렇게 갤러리에 도달했을 때 비로소 예술작품을 깊이 있게 받아들일 수 있게 될 것이다. 도로 쪽으로 돌출된 유리 박스는 도로를 지나는 보행자의 소통과 더불어 ‘나불천’을 인지하는 전망대 역할을 하게 된다. 사무실과 교육공간이 자리한 3층은 기능적 목적을 수행하는 동시에 풍경을 담아내눈 공간이다. 진주성의 능선과 멀리 보이는 산세, 도시의 지붕들이 개구부의 프레임 안으로 들어오면서 시선을 도시와 자연으로 확장시키는 통로가 된다.

A House of Photography Breathing with the Invisible Nabulcheon Stream

Beginning Architecture Beside a Forgotten Stream
The site is located on a corner in Sinan-dong, an old downtown area of Jinju. At first glance, it appears to be a leftover plot facing a wide road. However, the broad road to the east is in fact built over Nabulcheon Stream. Although the stream is now buried beneath the road, it was once a living waterway that flowed through the village.

Through this architecture, we wanted to reconnect with this invisible stream. Although the covered road cannot be removed, we sought a way for architecture to recognize and remember the flow that still exists beneath it.

 

A Space of Boundary, An Architecture of Gaps
The building accommodates spaces for photography exhibitions and education. Instead of connecting each floor’s entrance directly to the interior, we planned the approach through a roofed outdoor space — a semi-exterior entrance area.

This entrance space works as a buffer zone between inside and outside, between the individual and the city, and between the private and the public. Here, people pause for a moment, lift their heads, look around, and take in the landscape of the covered road and, in the distance, Jinjuseong Fortress.

It may be only a brief moment, but we believe this is where architecture connects the city and people. The space can become a mediator between people and land, city and nature, art and everyday life.

 

The Expressions of Outside and Inside
As a space for exhibitions, we hoped the building would not stand out too strongly. The exterior materials and colors were composed in restrained neutral tones. We wanted to create a calm and gentle image, almost like a black-and-white photograph. This also corresponds well with the character of photography as a medium.

When architecture becomes a quiet background, the artworks can appear more clearly. The interior finishes were also planned to feel clean and simple. Rather than relying on decoration, the space was designed so that light and the texture of materials themselves could be felt. We hoped it would become a place where appreciation and everyday life naturally settle together.

 

An Exhibition Building Meeting the City
The entrance on the first floor is the place where the building first meets the city. The approach from the road to the building was planned to be natural and flexible, while the entrance staircase and elevator were placed as visual focal points to make the direction of movement clear.

The second floor is the main photography gallery of the building. We slightly extended the circulation route leading into the exhibition room, creating a spatial device that allows visitors to enter a state of appreciation. As they move, their senses gradually shift, and the pace of emotional change slows down. This becomes a time of preparation. Only then, upon reaching the gallery, can visitors engage more deeply with the artworks.

The glass box projecting toward the road serves not only as a point of communication with pedestrians passing by, but also as an observatory from which the presence of Nabulcheon Stream can be perceived.

The third floor, where the office and education spaces are located, fulfills its functional role while also framing the surrounding landscape. The ridgeline of Jinjuseong Fortress, the distant mountains, and the roofs of the city enter through the openings, becoming a passage through which one’s gaze expands toward both the city and nature.
