별천지(別天地) : 밤하늘의 별을 품은 옛 목공소 터

‘특별한 다른 세상’을 뜻하는 별천지(別天地). 지리산 자락을 끼고 섬진강 끝자락에 다다르면 유독 청량한 녹음과 마주하게 된다. 어둠이 내리면 밤하늘에 별이 쏟아지는 이곳, 하동에서 ‘별천지’의‘별(別)’은 밤하늘의 ‘별(순우리말)’과 아름다운 운율(Rhyme)을 이룬다.

이곳은 오랜 시간 주민들의 가옥에 필요한 문짝과 창틀, 가구를 만들며 하동의 삶을 보듬어온 ‘현대목공소’가 있던 자리다. 현대 건축자재와 기성 가구의 보편화로 목공소는 문을 닫았지만, 지역민들의 왕래가 잦았던 장소의 기억은 고스란히 남아있다.

송림공원 초입에 위치한 이곳은 하동의 관문이라는 상징성을 가진 곳으로 문학인의 마을과 하동도서관을 잇는 중간지점으로 책과 친해질 수 있는 최적의 입지이며, 또한 하동공원과 송림공원을 연결하는 쌈지공원을 끼고 있어, 말 그대로 밤하늘을 올려다보기 좋은 언덕이기도 하다.

목공소 옛터의 흔적을 담아내는 공간으로 청소년들이 방과 후 시간을 편안하게 보낼 수 있는 만화카페를 조성하고, 하동을 방문하는 자전거 라이더와 여행객의 휴식처를 제공하고자 하는 하동군의 따뜻한 제안에서 프로젝트가 시작되었다. 군의 고운 마음에 응답하기 위해 디자인에 더욱 세심한 고민을 담았다.

내부의 뼈대를 구성하는 60mmX350mm 규격의 수직부재는 480mm 간격으로 배치하여 건축물의 기둥 역할을 하고 있으며, 동일한 규격의 수평부재는 지진하중 등 횡하중에 저항함으로써 건축물의 기본골격을 완성하였다. 주요 구조재로 사용한 목재는 밝은 색상의 가문비나무를 사용하였는데 30mm 두께로 제재한 목재를 접착제로 부착한 GLT(Glue laminated timber)를 사용하여 전체적인 구조적 안정성을 고려하였다.

협소한 대지는 설계 초기단계부터 내부공간 활용 방안에 대해 큰 고민거리 안겨주었는데 목구조를 책방의 책꽂이로 사용함으로써 건축물의 구조가 책방의 가구가 되고 책방의 가구가 인테리어로 완성되는 ‘작은 만화책방’을 계획하였다.

작은 다락방은 청소년들에게는 아늑한 아지트가 되고, 어른들에게는 어린 시절의 향수를 자아내는 매력적인 공간이다.
마을 어귀 커다란 느티나무 그늘 아래 평상이 놓여 있듯, 이 만화카페 자체가 하나의 큰 나무가 되어 이용자들이 언제든 편안하게 쉬어 갈 수 있는 따뜻한 쉼터가 되기를 기대한다.

나무를 다루던 옛터의 온기 위로, 이제는 자연과 책, 그리고 차가 어우러져 사람들의 마음을 채워주는 또 하나의 ‘별천지’가 펼쳐진다.

A Former Woodworking Shop Site Embracing the Stars of the Night Sky

Byeolcheonji(別天地) means “a special world apart.” At the foot of Jirisan Mountain, near the end of the Seomjin River, one encounters an especially fresh and green landscape. When darkness falls, stars seem to pour down from the night sky. In Hadong, the word byeol(別) in Byeolcheonji gently echoes with byeol, the Korean word for “star,” creating a quiet poetic rhythm.

 

The site was once home to Hyundai Woodworking Shop, a place that supported everyday life in Hadong by making doors, window frames, and furniture for local houses. Although the workshop eventually closed with the spread of modern building materials and ready-made furniture, the memory of a place once frequently visited by local residents still remains.

 

Located at the entrance to Songnim Park, the site holds symbolic meaning as a gateway to Hadong. It sits between the Village of Writers and Hadong Library, making it an ideal place to become familiar with books. It also lies beside a small pocket park that connects Hadong Park and Songnim Park, becoming a quiet hill from which one can look up at the night sky.

 

The project began with a warm proposal from Hadong County: to create a comic-book café where young people could comfortably spend time after school, while also offering a resting place for cyclists and travelers visiting Hadong. In response to this thoughtful intention, the design was developed with careful attention.

 

The interior structure is composed of vertical timber members measuring 60mm by 350mm, placed at 480mm intervals. These members function as the columns of the building. Horizontal members of the same size resist lateral forces, including seismic loads, completing the basic structural frame. The main structural material is light-colored spruce. For structural stability, gluelaminated timber, made by bonding 30mm-thick timber layers, was used.

 

From the early design stage, the small site raised an important question: how could the interior space be used most efficiently? The answer was to make the timber structure itself serve as the bookshelves of the comic-book café. In this way, the structure becomes furniture, and the furniture becomes the interior. This idea forms the basis of the small comic-book library.

 

The small attic becomes a cozy hideout for young people, while also recalling childhood memories for adults. Like a wooden platform placed under the shade of a large zelkova tree at the entrance of a village, this comic-book café is imagined as one big tree — a warm resting place where anyone can pause comfortably at any time.

 

On the warmth of a former woodworking site, a new Byeolcheonji now unfolds, where nature, books, and tea come together to fill people’s hearts.
